The City of Vancouver is seeking an Engineering Assistant II to review design drawings and construction plans for utility projects on city streets. You will work with engineers to ensure plans meet City standards and coordinate with utility companies and developers.

Preferred candidates have CAD drafting skills, GIS familiarity, and strong written/verbal communication. Regular full-time employment with benefits and a November 2026 start date is offered.

Formación

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by relevant technical courses in computerized drafting.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of GIS and AutoCAD/Bluebeam usage.

Main Purpose & Function
The Engineering Assistant II works with a team of technical staff and engineers of the Utilities Management Branch to review and process design drawings and construction plans from 3rd party utilities who work on City streets.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operates AutoCad to check Utility Company plans for accuracy and completeness and to access, extract, and input data into the City’s GIS.
  • Works with utility companies, developers, contractors and other City departments to coordinate utility construction on City streets ensuring proposed utility construction is designed and built to City utility standards.
  • Field checks utility drawings and a wide range of City construction and development projects as they relate to utility company facilities, report the findings back to utility staff in a concise accurate manner and arrange for construction schedules and traffic coordination.
  • Ensures existing policies and procedures are adhered to and assists in establishing new policies to improve Branch processes and construction standards which are reflected in the Street Utilities By-Law, Utilities Design and Construction Manual and several Municipal Access Agreements.
  • Utilizessoftware productsto maintain accurate branch records and perform various tasks of plan filing, retrieval and reproduction and other related clerical and technical duties as required.
  • Provides assistance to City staff and the public in accessing and understanding utility information.
  • Provides written correspondence as required and maintains accurate records and files from different databases.
  • Performs related work as required including attending meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by relevant technical courses in computerized drafting and some related experience with heavy civil construction preferably in a municipal setting or, an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge and some experience using desktop software including GIS.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Bluebeam.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to deal with workloads, frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with the public and City staff in person, by email and telephone.
  • Ability toreadand interpretengineering drawings.
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with the department’s regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Skill and accuracy in checking and maintaining office records in accordance with Organizational Quality Management standards.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and the ability to work with minimal direction.
  • Local travel is a requirement of this position; transportation arrangements must meet the operational needs of Engineering Services.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, POSSE, VanDocs, SAP and Outlook areassets.
  • Familiarity with the underground/overhead utility network is an asset.
