Overview
As the Engineering Design Technologist, you will work closely with our survey and design teams to create both preliminary and detailed drawings for road reconstruction and other municipal infrastructure replacements. You will conduct research and data collection activities. You will be responsible for the preparation of contract documents and cost estimates. In addition to this design function, you will provide support and engineering information to consultants, contractors, and the public as necessary.
This position is temporary up to 12 months.
Responsibilities
- Research and compiles data to prepare detailed engineering designs for capital construction projects in Autodesk Civil 3D.
- Calculate drainage areas and design flows to recommend for approval, pipe size and layout for municipal infrastructure.
- Collect base information related to utilities, property boundaries, ownership, and existing "plan and profiles" of roadway and underground services to be used for design drawings.
- Prepare contract documents including contract drawings, Form of Tender, and Specifications.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for capital works.
- Creates graphics/presentations as required by the division.
- Provide support and engineering information to consultants, contractors, real estate agents, and the public as necessary.
- Provide Engineering representation in the Customer Service Center on a rotational basis.
- Attend public meetings to discuss infrastructure replacement projects to the general public.
- Prepare "as-recorded" drawings and data for City's records.
- Maintains plotters and scanners in operation by ordering supplies and arranging for servicing and maintenance.
- Provide administrative duties including but not limited to the maintenance of engineering drawing files, collection and tracking of as-built drawing submission.
- Attend committees and working groups as required to provide expertise and experience.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 3-year diploma/degree in Civil Engineering Technology or related field.
- Registered Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technologists and Technicians (O.A.C.E.T.T.), or equivalent provincial association.
- Minimum of 2 yearsrelated experience of design of sanitary and storm sewers, drinking water systems and road geometry.
- Proven ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
- Proven knowledge of surveying, design and inspection procedures, infrastructure systems with solid understanding of technical terms related to Civil Engineering, design and construction methods and practices.
- Highly developed skills in engineering graphics tools, equipment and related software applications especially Autodesk Civil 3D.
- Experience in the development of engineering drawings preferably for the construction of municipal infrastructure.
- Applied knowledge and understanding of legal survey data.
- Mathematical skills to be able to perform calculations, interpret survey and design data.
- Advanced understanding of coordinate geometry.
- Problem-solving capabilities with an attention to detail.
- Excellent customer service skills to deal with a variety of external and internal customers.
- Must have the ability to participate as an effective team member.
- Highly developed time management skills.
- Satisfactory completion of recognized courses in Geometric Road Design, Sewer and Watermain Design and Construction Inspection.
- Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
