Job summary

CPKC in Moose Jaw, SK is seeking an Engineer in Training to start your career in a fast-paced railway environment. You will work on projects, supervise consultants, prepare reports, and support safety and construction management while pursuing a Professional Engineer license.

This entry role offers mentorship, exposure to tender and business development activities, on-site field visits, and potential for growth within a North American railroad with a strong safety culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Must be P.Eng eligible.
• 1–3 years of experience or co-op acceptable.
• Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Manage the execution of assigned projects, ensuring on-time, within scope and within budget.
• Supervise and coordinate with engineering consultants.
• Prepare cost estimates, technical reports, memos and external correspondence.
• Coordinate with internal departments, external stakeholders, and customers.
• Provide on-site construction management and ensure safety standards compliance.
• Support business development with third-party client projects.
• Perform on-site safety audits and coordination with union personnel.
• Travel to project sites as needed and participate in on-call rotation.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Are you a recent Civil Engineering graduate looking to kick-start your career in a hands-on, fast-paced environment? CPKC is looking for an Engineer in Training to join our team and help shape the future of railway infrastructure. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking to obtain an Professional Engineer license (P. Eng) eligible, passionate about transportation systems, and eager to grow through mentorship and real-world project experience.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Manage the execution of assigned projects, ensuring delivery on time, within scope, and on budget
• Supervise and coordinate with engineering consultants
• Prepare cost estimates, technical reports, memos, and external correspondence
• Coordinate with internal departments, external stakeholders, and customers
• Provide on-site construction management and ensure compliance with safety standards
• Support Business Development with third-party customer projects
• Perform on-site safety audits and efficiency assessments, while engaging with union personnel to ensure alignment with safety protocols and project goals
• Field travel as needed to project sites to familiarize yourself with the territory
• Participate in on-call rotation to support 24/7 operations

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering – Civil (Mechanical or Industrial backgrounds will be considered)
• Must be Professional Engineer (P. Eng) eligible
• Minimum of 1-3 years of experience (co-op experience considered)
• Valid driver's license

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
