Job summary

Boralex Inc. is seeking an Energy Trader to optimize revenue for its renewable energy portfolio across North American power markets. You will execute trading/scheduling strategies, manage day-ahead and intraday activities, and ensure compliance within ISO frameworks.

The role requires strong analytical skills, knowledge of energy markets, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Based in Quebec with a rotating 12-hour shift schedule.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field is required or strongly preferred.
• Experience or knowledge of energy markets is a strong asset.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and manage Day-Ahead and Real-Time schedules.
• Submit, validate, and maintain bids and offers with ISOs.
• Ensure compliance with market rules and asset operating capabilities.
• Support energy, capacity, and ancillary service market participation.
• Develop and execute physical revenue optimization strategies.
• Optimize production schedules and market positions across Day-Ahead, Real-Time and ancillary service markets.
• Identify opportunities to maximize portfolio value while managing constraints.
• Support the development and execution of financial trading strategies.
• Participate in futures, swaps, FTRs and similar market products across multiple ISOs.
• Adhere to Risk Management Framework and internal controls.
• Ensure trading activities comply with regulations and policies.
• Record, validate, and reconcile transactions in ETRM systems.
• Support reporting and post-trade analysis.
• Understand North American market structures including IESO, ERCOT, SPP, NYISO, CAISO.
• Contribute to market analysis and short-term price forecasts.
• Monitor intraday and next-day price movements to support trading decisions.
• Contribute to automation tools, internal apps and analytical models.
• Support initiatives that improve trading efficiency, data quality and operational performance.

As an Energy Trader, you will play a key role in optimizing the value of Boralex's growing renewable energy portfolio by executing trading and scheduling strategies across North American power markets while contributing to the evolution of our commercial and operational capabilities.

You will play an important role in:

Reporting to the Manager Energy Trader, you will be responsible for executing revenue optimization strategies in the intraday and day-ahead markets. As part of a collaborative and agile team, you will:

Energy Scheduling & Market Operations

• Prepare and manage Day-Ahead and Real-Time schedules.
• Submit, validate, and maintain bids and offers with Independent System Operators (ISOs).
• Ensure compliance with market rules, contractual obligations, and asset operating capabilities.
• Support energy, capacity, and ancillary service market participation.

Revenue Optimization

• Develop and execute physical revenue optimization strategies.
• Optimize production schedules and market positions across Day-Ahead, Real-Time, and ancillary service markets.
• Identify opportunities to maximize portfolio value while managing operational constraints.
• Support the development and execution of financial trading strategies.
• Participate in transactions involving futures, swaps, Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs), and equivalent market products across multiple ISOs.

Compliance & Risk Management

• Adhere to Boralex's Risk Management Framework and internal controls.
• Ensure all trading activities are conducted in accordance with applicable regulations and company policies.

Transaction Management & Reporting

• Accurately record, validate, and reconcile transactions within Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems.
• Support reporting and post-trade analysis activities.
• Maintain a strong understanding of North American energy market structures, rules, and dynamics, including IESO, ERCOT, SPP, NYISO, and CAISO.
• Contribute to market analysis and the development of short-term price forecasts.
• Monitor intraday and next-day price movements to support trading decisions.
• Contribute to the development of automation tools, internal applications, and analytical models.
• Support initiatives that improve trading efficiency, data quality, and operational performance.

To succeed in this position, you need:

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Engineering, Economics, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
• Experience or knowledge of energy markets and/or energy trading is considered a strong asset.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
• High attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Programming, data analytics, or data science knowledge is considered an asset.
• Fluency in English is required; French is an asset.
• This position is based in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
• Candidates must be willing to work a rotating schedule that includes 12-hour shifts.
