Energy & Sustainability Manager - Redevelopment Office

The Redevelopment and Support Services portfolio includes all major CAMH development, renovations, internal Plant Operations & Maintenance (POM), and oversight of contracted third-party P3 (Public Private Partnership) Facility Maintenance services to ensure seamless and smooth daily operations of CAMH facilities in support of the transformation of lives for those affected by mental illness.

The CAMH Plant Operations and Maintenance team is responsible for the provision of maintenance services to seven CAMH Retained Buildings, specific services in three “Phase 1B” and two “Phase 1C” Buildings, and total accountability for CAMH utilities spending. CAMH also provides P3 operational contract management and oversight of Phase 1B and Phase 1C energy management activities, reporting and performance.

CAMH is seeking a full-time, permanent Energy and Sustainability Manager.

Reporting to the Director, Facilities Planning, Plant Operations and Maintenance, & P3 FM Contracts, the Energy and Sustainability Manager will be responsible for purposefully leading operational excellence in energy and sustainability across all CAMH facilities. The Energy and Sustainability Manager will help CAMH achieve their overarching goal to achieve integrated, sustainable and highly energy efficient facilities which reflect its leadership role and values in the 21st century of a sustainable healthcare service delivery. This role will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing energy conservation and sustainability initiatives across all departments and facilities on the CAMH Queen Street site.

The successful candidate will possess excellent skills in customer service and relationship management, negotiations, teamwork, and analytics, along with strong business acumen and demonstrated leadership, strategic thinking, and project management skills. Strong computer skills and excellent written and oral communication skills are also required. The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and communities is essential.

The Energy and Sustainability Manager will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements. This position is located at 1001 Queen Street West.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Sustainability strategy management
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Benchmark, analyze energy consumption patterns, identify areas for improvement, implement strategies and monitor activities to reduce energy usage and costs across all CAMH facilities.
  • For third party Phase 1B and Phase 1C facilities: management and optimization of energy baseline; constructive review of monthly, quarterly and annual energy reports; mitigation of financial gains by Project Co.
  • Review of upcoming Phase 1D Forensics and Research facilities Energy and Sustainability Design and Construction with a view toward optimal operations.
  • Investigate the feasibility of incorporating renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or geothermal into CAMH operations, and manage the implementation process for any related initiatives.
  • Develop a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligned with organizational goals and industry best practices, including initiatives to reduce waste, increase recycling, and minimize carbon emissions.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and best practices in energy and sustainability management to offset CAMH operational costs.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations and standards, and stay informed about emerging regulatory requirements related to energy and sustainability.
  • Engage employees at all levels of the organization to foster a culture of sustainability, provide education and training on energy-saving practices, and encourage participation in sustainability initiatives.
  • Collaborate with relevant departments to promote energy conservation initiatives.
  • Annual energy, water and GHG reporting in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager electronic reporting system, as per Ontario Regulation 25/23.
  • Develop and manage the CAMH 5-year conservation and demand management plan, as per Green Energy Act Regulation 397/11.
  • Develop and manage program budgets, ensuring appropriate and efficient allocation of resources.
  • Monitor and manage financial performance and identify opportunities for cost savings or revenue generation.
  • Ensure alignment of budgets and expenditures with CAMH priorities.
  • Review the energy impact of proposed Variations.
  • Monitor and track the outcomes of energy conservation measures using the IPMVP (International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol).
  • Assist in commissioning, monitoring and verification.
  • Ensure efficient and effective use of financial resources.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in mechanical/electrical or other applicable field.
  • Applicable facilities management and energy management credentials.
  • At minimum 5 years of progressive experience in energy management.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to foster relationships and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated change management skills and experience.
  • Strong, well developed business management skills (strategic planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and analytics).
  • Superior analytical, problem solving, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Well-developed leadership and management skills deeply rooted in teamwork and mutual support.
  • Results-oriented and client-focused with a commitment to excellence.
  • Capacity to thrive in a multi-disciplined, diverse environment.
  • Ability to find the best approach or solution to highly diverse challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and manage changing priorities.
  • Energy modeling experience (preferable).
  • Energy data analysis using Scatter plots, regression, CUSUM (Cumulative Sum Chart) and control charts.
  • Experience working with diverse clients and stakeholders.
