Job summary

Manitoba Hydro is seeking a permanent EMS Support Engineer to join the Control Centre Technology Systems Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The role focuses on planning, design, development, and support of EMS power system applications including state estimation and contingencies.

Responsibilities include providing technical guidance, obtaining and maintaining data for EMS tools, and improving workflows. A strong engineering background in power systems and experience with EMS/SCADA systems are

Qualifications

  • Graduate in Electrical or Computer Engineering with a minimum of four years' related engineering experience.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willing to attain)
  • CIP and Standards of Conduct training completed or within two weeks of start date
  • Must obtain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a 'Clear' security rating per policy P513
  • Ability to perform engineering analysis and develop software solutions for EMS power systems

  • Provide engineering guidance and training for EMS network applications.
  • Collect and implement power system data for EMS applications.
  • Support System Performance Department with EMS cases and data snapshots.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and document new workflows.
  • Prepare formal reports and technical memorandums.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a permanent EMS Support Engineer to join our Control Centre Technology Systems Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Responsibilities:
  • Participate in the planning, design, on-going development, engineering analysis and support, implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of EMS power system applications including State Estimation, Contingency Analysis, Remedial Action Schemes modeling, SM/RMTNET (multi-timepoint analysis), DSA Tools, WAMS, and Dynamic Line Ratings
  • Provide engineering support, technical guidance on and training in respect to the maintenance and operation of the EMS network applications and seek opportunities for creative solutions and innovative implementations.
  • Responsible for the collection, compilation and implementation of power system data and application parameters; required for the maintenance of EMS power system applications.
  • Provide on-going support to ensure that the System Performance Department is provided with EMS cases, including snapshots of real-time or state-estimated data, reports produced from historical data DSA Tools Savecases.
  • Identify opportunities to improve on process efficiencies and active in developing and documenting new workflow processes.
  • Prepare formal reports and technical memorandums.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate in Electrical or Computer Engineering from a University of recognized standing with a minimum of four years' related engineering experience.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Training is required and must be completed no later than two weeks after the start date.
  • Must have completed Standards of Conduct training or be willing to complete within two weeks of start date.
  • Obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in performing engineering analysis, developing solutions, integrating software solutions and software development best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle several concurrent tasks in an efficient and organized manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with external and internal contacts in multiple departments and positions.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and effectively solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use computer programs intended for power system simulation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop computer models to analyze power systems.
  • Experience with a variety of utility-based power apparatus, communication equipment and EMS/SCADA systems would be an asset.
  • Post graduate or related power system courses would be an asset.
  • Possess a valid Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Notes/Comments:
  • The successful applicant will reside within the Winnipeg headquarters zone or within a 20 minute travelling distance from the assembly point during the periods of standby. In the event that this requirement causes the employee to incur incremental costs during periods of standby, such costs will be the employee's responsibility.
  • Notwithstanding the above, it continues to be the Corporation's preference for employees to regularly reside within the Winnipeg headquarters zone or within a 20 minute travelling distance from the assembly point.
Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the Professional Engineer II classification is $44.75-$61.75 Hourly, $85,745.40-$118,316.64 Annually. The range for the Engineer-in-Training classification is $33.48-$47.12 Hourly, $64,162.80-$90,284.22 Annually.
