Job summary

Manitoba Hydro is seeking a Capacity Operations Studies Engineer in Winnipeg, MB. The role involves analyzing and studying capacity planning, coordinating outages, and engaging stakeholders to optimize resource adequacy and reliability.

The candidate will assess generation, outages, load, exports/imports, and losses across the operations planning horizon, aligning with NERC and evolving MISO standards. A strong analytical background and collaboration across departments are essential.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree with 6+ years of experience in hydroelectric operations or planning.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or ability to attain membership)
  • Familiarity with Manitoba Hydro generating system and operating practices is an asset.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude with skills in statistical analysis and scientific computing.
  • Able to work independently, as part of a team, and demonstrate mature judgment.
  • Knowledge of corporate policies and regulations; willingness to enroll in training.

Responsibilities

  • Support the mid-term capacity planning framework (2 weeks to 3 years out) and reporting for stakeholders.
  • Prepare before/after analysis of Manitoba Hydro's capacity to ensure adequate resources meet reliability requirements.
  • Assist with outage coordination and set appropriate planned outage placeholders.
  • Conduct risk assessments for capacity balance using probabilistic modeling as needed.
  • Assess impact of new resources (wind, dispatchable capacity, DR, hydro upgrades) on planning horizon.
  • Engage with Energy Markets, System Operations, Asset Management, and other areas to support outage coordination.
  • Provide assessment and accreditation of hydraulic generation per NERC and evolving MISO standards.
  • Prepare outage schedules in the Decision Support System database.
  • Prepare studies and reports on costs/benefits for maintenance outages and updated outage schedules.

Position Overview

We're looking for a Capacity Operations Studies Engineer to conduct analysis and studies and engage with internal stakeholders to support Manitoba Hydro's resource adequacy and optimization of its resources in the operations planning time horizon. This includes ongoing assessment of all supply/demand components such as generation, outages, load, exports/imports and losses.

Responsibilities
  • Support the mid‑term (2 weeks to 3 years out) capacity planning framework, process and reporting structure for stakeholders across the enterprise.
  • Prepare before‑and‑after‑the‑fact analysis of Manitoba Hydro's capacity position to ensure sufficient accredited capacity resources meet reliability requirements.
  • Assist with enterprise‑wide outage coordination efforts including setting and communicating appropriate planned outage placeholders.
  • Conduct risk assessments for the capacity supply/demand balance in the operations planning time horizon, including probabilistic modeling, as required.
  • Assess the impact of new resources to the operations planning time horizon as they come into service, including new wind, dispatchable capacity, demand response, hydro enhancements, etc.
  • Engage with staff in other areas such as Energy Markets, System Operations, Asset Management, Project Management, Generation Operations & Maintenance to support the ongoing outage coordination and outage optimization activities.
  • Assist in providing adequate assessment and accreditation of hydraulic generation capability that is aligned with NERC and evolving MISO (Midcontinent Independent System Operator) standards and business practices.
  • Prepare and process up‑to‑date outage schedules in the Decision Support System database.
  • Help prepare studies and report on the before and after‑the‑fact estimates of costs and benefits for maintenance outages and process up‑to‑date outage schedules in the Decision Support System database.
Qualifications
  • Graduate in Engineering from a University of recognized standing with a minimum of six years' experience, including two years direct experience in the area of hydroelectric utility operations or planning.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
  • Familiarity with the Manitoba Hydro generating system including system operating techniques and practices is an asset.
  • Above average mathematical aptitude with skills in systems techniques, statistical analysis, and scientific computer programming.
  • Must be a team player but capable of working independently, innovative, organized, practical, tolerant and possess mature judgement.
  • Knowledge of corporate policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Must be willing to enroll in formal training sessions related to supporting the principal duties of this position.
Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $48.74-$67.29 Hourly, $93,398.24-$128,947.78 Annually.
