Job summary

Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada in Whitby, Ontario is hiring a Specialist, Orientation & Mobility to deliver comprehensive O&M services. In this role you will assess clients, design individualized mobility plans, and teach travel skills and cane techniques to promote independence.

The position involves collaboration with healthcare professionals, travel to client homes and communities, and ongoing mentorship to staff. A COMS certification and relevant education are required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of and experience with individuals who have vision loss.
• Understanding of disabilities across life stages (children to seniors).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to make decisions and solve problems.
• Mature, professional attitude and self-direction.
• Client-centred documentation and reporting.
• Commitment to healthcare documentation standards.

Responsibilities

• Conduct O&M assessments and document individuals' needs and goals.
• Co-create an orientation & mobility service plan with clients.
• Teach movement concepts, spatial awareness, and cane techniques.
• Support clients in advocacy and independence.
• Provide information on electronic travel aids and tactile maps.
• Train family members and others in sighted guide techniques.
• Collaborate with guide dog schools and accessibility knowledge.
• Maintain VLRC documentation and complete administrative tasks.
