MaKami College is growing, and we're excited to offer a new opportunity for an experienced Employment Lawyer to join our collaborative and supportive HR team. As a non-profit private college, our mission is centred around empowering students through education and supporting our communities, and that includes taking care of our team. This role offers meaningful work with purpose, a healthy work-life balance, and the chance to be part of a team that values professionalism, compassion, and integrity. You will be mainly responsible for providing expert legal advice and representation on employment-related matters, including contract review and drafting, dispute resolution, compliance with labour laws, and training on workplace policies. They ensure the organization adheres to legal standards and effectively handles any employment disputes or legal proceedings.

Major Accountabilities/Responsibilities (Including but not limited to the following):

  • Offer accurate and timely advice on employment-related matters.
  • Handle employment disputes efficiently, aiming for resolution through mediation and arbitration.
  • Review and draft employment contracts and agreements.
  • Assist in creating and implementing compliant workplace policies.
  • Offer training to staff and management on employment law topics.
  • Represent the college in legal proceedings with a focus on favourable outcomes.
  • Identify and advise on strategies to mitigate legal risks.
  • Work closely with other departments to address legal issues.
  • Continuously improve practices by staying informed on changes in employment law.

Education and experience

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in professional organizations such as the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) or the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association (ACTLA).
  • Additional coursework or certification in employment law, labour law, or related fields.
  • Ongoing participation in continuing legal education to stay updated on changes in employment law and regulations.
  • At least 7 - 10 years of experience practicing employment law, preferably with a focus on educational institutions or public sector organizations.
  • Proficiency in using legal research databases, case management software, and other relevant technology tools.
