Qualifications

Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION:

The Electrophysiology Technologist’s main responsibilities are related to technical and monitoring support of electrophysiology studies, and coordination of in-lab activities such as specialty supplies and equipment.

Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Procedural Support of Electrophysiology Studies

  • Independently perform safe and efficient operation of simulators, RF generators, electrophysiological and all related equipment, mapping systems, pacemaker and defibrillator (both external and implantable) technology and programmer operation for study and intervention of patients undergoing investigations and/or interventions in the EP Laboratory.
  • Interpret performance measurements required in the evaluation of patients undergoing electrophysiology studies including:
    • Intra-cardiac electrgrams
    • Operatin of multi-channel electrophysiology study recording system(s)
    • Pressure tracings
  • Anticipate physician needs in the performance of the electrophysiology studies.
  • Perform sterile technique, sterile set up, and scrub roles if needed during procedures. Ensure proper sterile set up and that equipment is available for the study.
  • Initiate recommendations for the plan of care in consultation with the physician and members of the healthcare team during the performance of therapeutic procedures.
  • Perform troubleshooting in the care and handling of electrophysiology equipment including monitoring systems, stimulators, RF generators, mapping systems, pressure transducers.
  • Prepare all appropriate documentation for the electrophysiology monitoring systems, and device programmers for the patient chart
  • Collaborate in the ordering of specialty equipment and supplies for use in the electrophysiology laboratory
  • Participate in the training of new staff in the specialty of Electrophysiology.

Procedural Support of other Cardiac Diagnostic Studies or Interventions

  • Safe and efficient operation of hemodynamic equipment for study and intervention of patients undergoing investigations and/or interventions in the Cardiovascular Procedure Unit.
  • Safe and efficient operation of pacemaker analyzer during pacemaker insertion to evaluate lead placement and integrity
  • Perform calculations required in the evaluation of patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.
  • Perform sterile technique, sterile set up, and scrub roles if needed during procedures and diagnostic studies.
  • Prepare all appropriate documentation for the hemodynamic monitoring systems for the patient chart.
  • Interrogation and evaluation of parameter settings on implantable devices including as required, pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, and implanted loop recorders.
  • Support specialty electrophysiology diagnostic evaluation with external loop recorders. Provide appropriate study documentation for physician evaluation.

Program Planning and Quality Assurance

  • Participate and provide clinical expertise in the evaluation of program design, process, and efficiencies.
  • Participate in the development, evaluation and updating of lab protocols, manuals and procedures.
  • Provide clinical expertise in the evaluation of equipment, supplies and technical aspects of in-lab use.
  • Maintain and update eletrophysiology study data in the database to allow for future quality monitoring.
  • Participate in quarterly program review for evaluation of patient outcomes.
  • Participate in hospital program tactics as required.
  • Perform cross-functional duties as assigned or requested.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a diploma (3 year) in Cardiovascular Technology
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as an Electrophysiology Technologist
  • Current certification with the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE)
  • Successful completion of the IBHRE Certification Exams for Competency in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Cardiac Rhythm Device Therapy for the Allied Health Professional.
  • Current registration in the Canadian Association of Cardiopulmonary Technologists
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize significant cardiac arrhythmias, variations in wave morphology and electrocardiographic signs of myocardial ischemia/infarction on ECG’s.
  • Demonstrated ability to sit and concentrate on a computer screen for long periods of time
  • Current CPR certification
  • Proficient computer and technical skills
  • Equipment and Supply ordering and inventory experience
  • Proficient knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology
  • Good working knowledge of computers and database management.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills
