Job summary

UBC is seeking an Electrician to maintain and troubleshoot electrical, control, BMS, automation, and life-safety systems across the Vancouver campus. You will perform preventive maintenance, repairs, testing, and emergency response to keep residential communities running safely.

Reporting to the Head and/or Sub-Head Electrician, you will work from drawings and work orders, interpret specs, and support a variety of shifts including days, evenings, and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Red Seal Electrician or Industrial Electrician certification.
  • Valid BC driver's license; normal color vision.
  • Minimum five years of related experience.
  • Able to interpret drawings, specifications, sketches, and maintenance manuals; strong computer skills.
  • Willing to work shifts including days, evenings and weekends; respond to emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Preventive and breakdown maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and installation as an Industrial Controls Electrician.
  • Work from drawings, specs, and work orders in compliance with codes and regs.
  • Respond to trouble calls and emergencies outside normal hours.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain industrial electrical drive systems, automation, PLC, and robotic systems.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot LAN/serial data systems, standby systems, and HVAC controls.
  • Perform fire life-safety testing and instrumentation calibration.
  • Complete time cards, work orders, PM reports, and test-inspection reports; create as-built docs.
  • May train or mentor apprentices and labourers.

About the role

Join UBC Student Housing and Community Services as an Electrician, maintaining and troubleshooting electrical, control, BMS, automation, and life-safety systems across the Vancouver campus. Reporting to the Head and/or Sub-Head Electrician, you will keep the university's residential communities running safely through preventive maintenance, repairs, testing, and emergency response.

Responsibilities
  • Preventive and breakdown maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and installation as an Industrial Controls Electrician
  • Work from oral and written instructions, drawings, specifications, and work orders, in compliance with applicable codes and regulations
  • Respond to trouble calls and emergencies during and outside normal working hours
  • Troubleshoot and maintain industrial electrical drive systems, automation systems, robotic systems, electronic controls, and microprocessor-based (PLC) systems
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot communication LAN and serial data systems, emergency standby systems, and heating, ventilation, and climate control systems
  • Perform fire life-safety testing and maintenance; calibrate instrumentation with specialized test equipment
  • Complete time cards, work orders, preventive maintenance reports, and test-inspection reports; create as-built documentation
  • May train, mentor, or check the work of apprentices and labourers
Qualifications
  • Trade certification to journeyperson level as a Red Seal Electrician or Industrial Electrician
  • Valid BC driver's licence; normal colour vision
  • Minimum five years of related experience
  • Working knowledge of industrial safety regulations, building codes, and trade maintenance practices
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, sketches, and maintenance manuals; strong computer skills
  • Able to work independently, respond to emergency calls outside normal hours, and work various shifts including days, evenings, and weekends
  • Asset: Registered Fire Protection Technician (RFPT) certification through ASTTBC, or technician certification through the Canadian Fire Alarm Association
Pay & benefits
  • Annual salary approximately $89,844–$96,336
  • Overtime paid at double time where applicable
  • University pension: UBC contributes 9.4% of gross pensionable earnings
  • Vacation starting at 3 weeks, growing to 6 weeks, plus 3 additional days off between Christmas and New Year
