Job summary

Olymel in Alberta is seeking an Electrician to join our plant team. You will install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems and equipment throughout the facility, ensuring safety and compliance with electrical codes and our standards.

The ideal candidate is a certified journeyperson with 2–3 years of industrial electrical experience, familiar with PLCs, motor controls, VFDs, and reading schematics.

Qualifications

  • Certified Journeyperson Electrician with Alberta Certificate of Qualification or interprovincial Red Seal.
  • 2–3 years of industrial electrical experience, ideally in food processing/manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and provincial safety regulations.
  • Experience with PLCs, motor controls, VFDs, and industrial control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems, motors, control panels, PLCs, and production equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical faults and perform repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct preventive and predictive maintenance on electrical equipment per schedule.
  • Read electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Ensure compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code, provincial regs, and internal safety standards.
  • Complete lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for all electrical work.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and emergency electrical issues.
  • Maintain records of repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized and safe.
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and company policies.

Position Summary

The Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment throughout the plant. This role supports uninterrupted production in a fast-paced meat processing environment by ensuring all electrical systems, controls, and machinery operate safely and efficiently, in compliance with electrical codes, company policies, and the collective agreement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems, motors, control panels, PLCs, and production equipment
  • Diagnose electrical faults and perform repairs to minimize production downtime
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on electrical equipment according to scheduled maintenance programs
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals
  • Ensure all electrical work complies with the Canadian Electrical Code, provincial regulations, and internal safety standards
  • Complete lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures correctly for all electrical work
  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and emergency electrical issues
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance activities
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Comply with all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and company policies
Qualifications
Required:
  • Certified Journeyperson Electrician (Alberta Certificate of Qualification or interprovincial Red Seal)
  • Minimum 2-3 years of industrial electrical experience, preferably in a food processing or manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and provincial safety regulations
  • Experience with PLCs, motor controls, VFDs, and industrial control systems
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings
Preferred
  • Experience in a unionized industrial or food manufacturing setting
  • Knowledge of refrigeration and ammonia systems (an asset)
  • Familiarity with SCADA or building automation systems
Working Conditions
  • Plant environment with exposure to cold temperatures, wet/damp conditions, noise, and moving machinery
  • Standing, walking, climbing, and working at heights or in confined spaces as required
  • Must comply with all food safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
