Job summary

Nova Scotia Power seeks 8 permanent Electrical Technicians in the Substation Maintenance team. You will install, maintain and repair electrical equipment, including PLCs, relays, and SCADA systems, across multiple locations in Nova Scotia.

The role requires a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (Power) and 3 years’ related experience, with travel across the province and on‑call rotation. The position emphasizes safety, environmental responsibility, and compliance with the Emera policy,

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (Power Discipline) and eligibility for TechNova membership.
  • Three years’ experience maintaining electrical equipment related to substation operations.
  • Proven problem resolution skills with strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting electrical/electronic equipment and reading electrical drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of substation equipment including PLCs, relays, SCADA, transformers, breakers and switches.
  • Install, commission, maintain and repair electrical/electronic substation equipment on the Transmission/Distribution System.
  • Assist operation of the NSP transmission system for switching and isolation during maintenance.
  • Travel throughout the province for maintenance, reliability and customer restoration.
  • Participate in regulatory training and on‑the‑job training to develop new skills.

We are currently looking for 8 permanent Electrical Technicians to join our Substation Maintenance team.

As a member of the Substation Maintenance team:

  • You must develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of the purpose and operation of all electrical/electronic equipment related to substations, including PLC's, solid state relaying, remote SCADA telemetry and all associated protection equipment. You must also develop and maintain a strong electrical and mechanical working knowledge of substation transformers, breakers, reclosers, switches, and various other substation equipment.
  • You will perform all aspects of installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of electrical/electronic substation equipment on the Transmission/Distribution System (e.g. reclosers, breakers, transformers, controls, protective relays, telecommunication).
  • You will be required to assist with the operation of the NSP electrical transmission system related to switching and isolation of transmission lines for maintenance or other operational requirements.
  • You may be required to travel throughout the province for work related to maintenance, reliability and customer restoration.
  • You will be required to assist with emergency / storm related power restoration.
  • You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
  • You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.
  • Your primary residence must be located within 30 minutes of the work location Depot, and you will be required to take on call rotation and work other than normal hours and/or in extreme conditions.
  • You will have 90 days to provide proof of primary residence.

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.

These skills will make you successful:
  • You must possess a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (Power Discipline) with eligibility for membership with TechNova.
  • You must have three years’ experience maintaining electrical equipment related to substation operations.
  • You must have proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments and a strong mechanical aptitude.
  • You must be proficient with troubleshooting electrical / electronic equipment, a demonstrated understanding of electrical drawings as well as software use and programming in an industrial setting. You must be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, have a strong computer aptitude and the ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands.
  • You must have the skills and physical capabilities to perform all duties, including working at considerable heights and within watercourses.
  • You must hold a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License with a minimum of two years’ driving experience and provide a driver's abstract satisfactory to NSPI.

If no qualified candidates apply, consideration will be given to candidates who are willing to complete the substation electrical technician apprenticeship program within Nova Scotia Power. As an apprentice,

  • You will be responsible for developing skills in all aspects of substation maintenance, construction and electrical system operation while ensuring compliance with safe work methods and practices.
  • You will be accountable to complete the theory and practical aspects, as well as a minimum of 6000 hours in the apprenticeship program
  • You will be required to participate in a competency-based training, regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • You will be temporarily assigned to multiple locations across Nova Scotia throughout your apprenticeship.
  • Apprentice salary is as per the Collective Agreement, IBEW Local 1928
  • You will report to the Substation Apprentice Supervisor.
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities
  • Must be able to lift 37 lbs. from the floor to shoulder level on an occasional basis and 10 lbs. above shoulder level.
  • Able to carry 37 lbs. with both hands on an occasional basis, with the overall ability to carry 30 lbs.
  • Able to push and pull with upper and whole-body strength on an occasional basis up to 50 lbs.
  • Perform static reaching at waist to shoulder level frequently and from below waist level to overhead on an occasional basis. Perform frequent standing and sitting.
  • Perform occasional bending, stooping, walking and neck flexion, extension, and rotation movements.
  • Perform squatting, kneeling, crouching, and climbing on a minimal basis.
  • Ability to perform fine finger manipulation and possess a simple to firm grasp while performing turning and pinching motions.
