Job summary

GenCore Ltd. seeks an experienced Electrical Substation Designer to support the engineering and design of distribution and transmission substations across Ontario and Canada.

You will prepare detailed drawings, layouts, BOMs, and construction packages while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. The ideal candidate will have a Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, 5–7 years of substation design experience, and proficiency with AutoCAD and Microstation.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering.
• 5–7 years of experience in electrical substation design.
• Experience designing distribution and transmission substations required.

Job description

GenCore Ltd. is seeking an experienced Electrical Substation Designer to support the engineering and design of distribution and transmission substation projects across Ontario and Canada. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will prepare detailed engineering drawings, layouts, calculations, and construction packages for new and existing substations while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

The ideal candidate will possess strong technical design skills, a thorough understanding of electrical utility standards, and experience delivering detailed substation design packages from conceptual design through construction support. This role offers the opportunity to work on utility, renewable energy, industrial, and infrastructure projects while contributing to innovative engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare preliminary and detailed design drawings for distribution and transmission substations.
• Develop substation physical layouts including transformer, breakers and other equipment arrangement plans, Bus layouts, Grounding layouts, Cable routing and trench plans, Conduit layouts, Station service layouts, Lightning protection layouts, switchyard design, gantry design,
• Prepare single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, cable schedules, wiring diagrams, and equipment layouts.
• Produce Bills of Materials (BOMs), material requisitions, and construction packages.
• Conduct field investigations and site visits to verify existing conditions and collect engineering data.
• Prepare site survey reports and as-built drawings.
• Coordinate design activities with civil, structural, protection & control, telecommunications, and project management teams.
• Review vendor drawings and incorporate approved changes into project documentation.
• Assist with technical specifications, engineering reports, cost estimates, and proposal preparation.
• Support construction activities by responding to RFIs and reviewing field modifications.
• Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with applicable CSA, IEEE, IEC, utility, and client standards.
• Participate in quality assurance and quality control reviews in accordance with company procedures.
• Mentor junior designers and CAD technicians where required.
• Maintain accurate project documentation and regularly communicate project status to project managers.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
• Minimum 5–7 years of experience in electrical substation design.
• Experience designing distribution and transmission substations is required.
• Strong understanding of: Equipment layout, Cable routing, Grounding systems, Bus bar arrangements, Cable terminations, Conduit and cable tray systems
• Working knowledge of CSA, IEEE, IEC, Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and utility design standards.
• Experience preparing construction drawings and detailed engineering packages.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Microstation
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
• Valid Ontario Driver's License and willingness to travel to project sites as required.

Compensation

Annual Salary: $68,960 – $94,820, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
