Legacy Design Tech seeks a motivated Distribution Designer to design and deliver overhead and underground electrical distribution projects in Calgary, AB. You will work with project managers, engineers, and clients through the project lifecycle, preparing IFR/IFC packages and ensuring quality, safety, and on-time delivery.

Job description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Distribution Designer to join our growing team. In this role, you will be responsible for the design and delivery of overhead and underground electrical distribution projects, working closely with project managers, engineers, clients, and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Responsibilities include engineering design, permitting, project coordination, technical analysis, and the preparation of construction-ready design packages. The ideal candidate will have experience with utility distribution systems, strong proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, excellent project management skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality work safely and efficiently. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful infrastructure projects while mentoring junior team members and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, designers, clients, and stakeholders to support the successful delivery of distribution design projects.
  • Review survey information to confirm it is complete, accurate, and ready for design development.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and design documentation with a high level of accuracy and competency.
  • Apply theoretical and practical engineering knowledge to develop high-quality engineering drawings, calculations, and design solutions.
  • Contribute to design modifications, quality improvements, and process enhancements that support efficient project delivery.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including pole line analysis, dB loss calculations, pulling tensions, and other required technical assessments using applicable software and tools.
  • Coordinate and obtain required permits and approvals, including line assignments from cities and municipalities, crossing and proximity agreements, parks approvals, environmental approvals, and other project-specific requirements.
  • Lead or participate in meetings with clients, stakeholders, and internal project teams to support project planning, coordination, and issue resolution.
  • Prepare and submit complete design packages, including Issued for Review (IFR) and Issued for Construction (IFC) deliverables.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables to support successful, on-time project completion while maintaining a high standard of quality.
  • Prepare scopes of work, cost estimates, feasibility studies, and detailed design documents for distribution design projects.
  • Assess underground and overhead distribution and transmission line requirements and apply sound judgment when completing site assessments.
  • Support asset management and maintenance planning through accurate technical documentation and practical design recommendations.
  • Ensure engineering work is accurate, high quality, properly scheduled, and completed in alignment with project requirements and deliverables.
  • Manage, prioritize, and deliver multiple projects and work requests for internal teams and external clients.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and provide mentorship, guidance, and technical support to junior staff.
  • Demonstrate leadership in health and safety by following and promoting all applicable safety protocols and requirements.

  • Experience with the CSA codes, AEUC

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • Previous experience designing overhead and underground electrical distribution systems is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical utility distribution systems, construction practices, materials, and design standards.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation; experience with other utility design and engineering software is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of applicable CSA standards, Alberta Electrical Utility Code (AEUC), utility standards, and municipal requirements.
  • Experience completing voltage drop calculations, pole line analysis, pulling tension calculations, and other distribution-related engineering calculations.
  • Ability to interpret survey information, utility records, civil drawings, construction drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Experience preparing complete Issued for Review (IFR) and Issued for Construction (IFC) design packages.
  • Knowledge of permitting and approval processes, including municipal line assignments, crossing and proximity agreements, environmental requirements, and other utility-related approvals.
  • Experience preparing scopes of work, cost estimates, feasibility assessments, and detailed design documentation.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, schedules, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail with a demonstrated commitment to producing accurate, complete, and high-quality designs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with clients, municipalities, utilities, contractors, engineers, and internal project teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise sound technical judgment when evaluating design challenges and field conditions.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary project environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to junior designers and team members.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements applicable to utility design, construction, and field activities.
  • Experience working with Alberta electric utilities and their distribution standards is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience with ENMAX, FortisAlberta, or other Alberta utility distribution projects is considered an asset.
  • Professional designation or eligibility for registration with APEGA or ASET, as applicable to the candidate’s education and position, is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence and ability to attend project sites as required
