Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD and Microstation, streetlight software.
  • Experience with municipal and/or MTO projects is highly desirable.
  • Strong organizational, planning and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and coordinate with clients and agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the electrical project team and lead the electrical discipline in multidisciplinary projects.
  • Prepare photometric analyses, plans, specifications, wiring diagrams and power calculations per codes and standards.
  • Conduct site surveys to confirm scope and gather information, equipment and materials.
  • Perform detailed design and inspections for streetlighting and traffic signals on municipal projects.
  • Use AutoCAD/Microstation to create electrical drawings and layouts for transportation projects.
  • Perform lighting and loading calculations and short-circuit analyses.
  • Prepare technical documents including drawings, specifications, SOWs, BOMs and schedules.
  • Coordinate electrical design with other disciplines, vendors and external teams.
  • Provide direction to designers/drafters and verify calculations.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, agencies and authorities; lead meetings and ensure quality of drawings.
  • Support construction activities including submittal review, change orders and commissioning.
  • Verify field layouts with contractors and report deficiencies.
  • Ensure coordination with Local Hydro Authority and Electrical Safety Authority; attend meetings as needed.
  • Mentor junior staff.

Job Function:

This position will be responsible for the electrical engineering for streetlighting and traffic signal designs on municipal and provincial roadways as well as other municipal facilities. This is a key role in developing and leading the electrical discipline municipal and transportation projects. This is a great opportunity to get in at the ground level of developing and managing the electrical discipline at the company.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop the electrical project team and lead the electrical discipline in multidisciplinary projects.
  • Perform professional electrical engineering work in the preparation of photometric analysis, plans (including PH-M-125 drawings), specifications, wiring diagrams, power calculations, and details as per applicable codes and standards
  • Conduct site surveys, confirming scope of work, obtaining relevant information, equipment and materials.
  • Perform detailed design work and inspection work of streetlighting and traffic signals (temporary and permanent) for municipal design projects.
  • Utilize AutoCAD/Microstation to create and design electrical drawing, layouts and specification for municipal transportation projects
  • Perform lighting calculations (AGI software knowledge desired), loading calculations, short circuit
  • Preparation of technical documents including electrical drawings, equipment layouts, single line diagrams, and wiring schedules related to low voltage equipment and distribution, grounding
  • Application of codes and regulations to area of expertise and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards
  • Preparation of supporting documentation including technical specifications, SOW, bill of materials, databases, testing plans, schedules, reports, budgets, cost estimates, correspondence, and related contract documents
  • Coordination of electrical system design (cross-functionally) with other engineering disciplines (traffic, civil, structural, etc.), vendors, and outside design team members.
  • Providing direction to and coordination with internal designers/drafters team performing and verification of electrical design calculations.
  • Coordination and liaison with clients, contractors, agencies and approving authorities. Lead meetings including preparation of agendas and meeting notes, review and quality control of design drawings and documents.
  • Support of construction activities including review of submittals and shop, evaluation of proposals, payments, and change orders, periodic field work and travel including construction inspection, contractor liaison/oversight, start-ups and commissioning including factory and site acceptance testing
  • Verify field layout of all equipment with the contractor prior to installation. Carry out ongoing inspections and provide reports to verify that the work is carried out in conformance with the drawing and specifications. Any deficiencies in the work to be identified in the site reports.
  • Ensure that the Contractor is coordinating all work with Local Hydro Authority and the Electrical Safety Authority. Attend construction meetings to resolve and address electrical issues where required.
  • Mentoring of junior staff.
Qualifications:
  • University degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Registered with PEO as a Professional Engineer
  • 8 years of proven experience in the design and/or construction of highway electrical, lighting, traffic signals and ITS with an engineering consultant firm
  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD and Microstation, streetlight software
  • Prior experience working on municipal and/or MTO projects are highly desirable
  • Solid understanding and working knowledge of Canadian electrical codes and standards, relevant industry standards and regulations
  • Excellent organization and planning skills
  • Strong leadership, oral/written, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to be a part of multi-functional teams and cooperate with other members of the team, to successfully coordinate activities and accomplish goals
