This role offers the opportunity to work on projects of varying size and complexity, collaborating with customers, project managers, designers, and field personnel while contributing to the technical growth and success of a high-performing engineering team.

Overview

The Electrical Engineer, Medium Voltage (P.Eng.) will be responsible for engineering and designing medium and low voltage power distribution systems for industrial applications. The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience with medium voltage systems, motor control centres (MCCs), and variable frequency drives (VFDs), while taking ownership of engineering deliverables from concept through commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and engineer medium voltage and low voltage power distribution systems, including MV switchgear, MCCs, VFD systems, and associated electrical equipment.

  • Specify, select, and size motors, VFDs, transformers, protection devices, breakers, and related components for industrial applications.

  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables including single-line diagrams, load lists, schematics, equipment layouts, cable schedules, bills of material, and technical specifications.

  • Perform electrical engineering studies and calculations, including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, voltage drop, and harmonics analysis.

  • Review vendor drawings, technical submittals, and support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).

  • Provide support during construction, commissioning, and start-up activities, including troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues.

  • Assist sales and project teams with scope development, estimating, proposals, technical evaluations, and client support.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, regulations, and industry standards, including CEC, CSA, IEEE, NEMA, and IEC requirements.

  • Deliver engineering work in accordance with project schedules, budgets, quality expectations, and safety requirements.

  • Mentor junior engineers, designers, and technologists while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and engineering best practices.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution.

  • Professional Registration: Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or eligible for registration in Alberta.

  • Experience: 3-7 years of electrical engineering experience within industrial, oil & gas, utilities, or similar sectors.

  • Technical Expertise: Working knowledge of medium voltage systems (typically 2.4kV to 15kV), including switchgear, motor starting methods, and protection systems.

  • Equipment Experience: Practical experience with MCCs and VFDs, including specification, design, integration, testing, and commissioning.

  • Software: Proficiency with AutoCAD or comparable electrical design software, along with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Codes & Standards: Strong understanding of applicable industrial electrical codes and standards.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams and with clients.

  • Additional Requirements: Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project and customer sites as required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or EasyPower.

  • Familiarity with major VFD and MCC platforms, including Rockwell, Siemens, ABB, Eaton, and Schneider Electric.

  • Experience with PLC/DCS integration, industrial communications, and intelligent MCC systems.

  • Knowledge of hazardous area classification and equipment selection.

  • Project engineering experience or experience leading small to mid-sized projects.

  • H2S Alive, First Aid, or other applicable industrial safety certifications.

Working Conditions
  • Primarily office-based with periodic travel to customer facilities, industrial sites, and remote project locations.
