Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking an EHS Specialist to support our safety culture and environmental compliance. This office-based role primarily works with Environmental Compliance and SEMS, providing training, handling inquiries, and updating system documentation.

You will help report EHS data and KPIs to the corporate level and assist in maintaining compliance across sites, including ISN or Avetta. A strong computer and communication skill set is essential.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma required; regulatory and safety background preferred.
  • Strong computer, data reporting, and regulatory compliance skills requested.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders and lead audits.
  • Experience with SEMS, ISN, Avetta or Contractor Check is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support SEMS Leader by training users and updating system data.
  • Analyze issues by gathering information and applying logical analysis.
  • Assist environmental auditing and lead audit programs as needed.
  • Report EHS data and KPIs to corporate level and support sites.

Job description

EHS Specialist

We are seeking a highly organized and detail‑oriented EHS Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will play a critical part in supporting our safety culture and environmental compliance efforts. This office‑based role works primarily with the Environmental Compliance team and the Safety and Environmental Management System (SEMS) and its day‑to‑day operations. The role acts as the SEMS Leader by providing training, responding to inquiries regarding system functionality, user requests and updating data within the system. Managing updates to the EHS management system documentation and communicating revised processes to all stakeholders is required. A highly organized individual with strong computer skills will also support reporting of EHS data and KPIs to the corporate level and help maintain compliance sites such as ISN or Avetta.

Key Accountabilities of the Position
  • Analyze issues: gather relevant information systematically; consider a broad range of factors; understand complexities and relationships among problems; seek input from others; use accurate logic in analyses.
  • Attention to detail: strong computer skills; manage, analyze and accurately report data from SEMS; strong communication skills to understand user issues and explain solutions.
  • Assist with environmental auditing: evaluate conformance with regulatory, ISO 14001 and internal requirements; ability to lead audit teams; structure audit programs to integrate safety management system audits where applicable.
  • Reporting: strong organizational skills and ability to collaborate with multiple internal stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Communication skills and ability to influence others.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office or Google equivalents professionally.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member on projects.
  • Business acumen, strong analytical skills, strategic thinking, understanding of organizational behavior.
  • Knowledge of ISN, ComplyWorks, Avetta, Contractor Check is an asset.
  • In‑depth knowledge of applicable government regulations, environmental regulations and safety compliance is an asset.
Minimum Education
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma.
  • Valid Class 5 or G license.
Minimum Work Experience
  • Three to five years of related health and safety work experience.

  • Strong computer, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent safety and health track record in programs and processes.
  • Experience in training and education.
  • Exceptional organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Professional and positive attitude, strong work ethic, desire to learn and succeed.
  • Ability to work independently and build strong working relationships.
  • Knowledge of environmental and health and safety legislation.
  • Experience with TDG, handling and transportation is an asset.
  • Calm demeanor in emergency situations.
