Route Supervisor Job Description
The Route Supervisor will be responsible for developing a thorough understanding of the company's transportation requirements and patterns. They will review and process daily operations, evaluate and recommend equipment needs, and plan and schedule appropriate service lines to maintain a cost-effective balance between customer service and operational costs. They will ensure compliance with all government-related programs specific to mode and direction of haulage.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct supervision of all drivers, ensuring ongoing training, discipline, and procedural implementation. May act as a point of contact for the public, staff, contractors, etc.
- Gather and communicate safety issues, driver complaints, and customer concerns to relevant parties.
- Track ongoing service and driver issues; document coaching requirements.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure proper service and maintenance of all units, including safety devices, vehicle lighting, warning devices, fittings, and safety supplies.
- Maintain a safe working environment; report issues immediately to your supervisor.
- Ensure delivery of company policies, systems, and industry-related training to drivers.
- Perform accident investigations involving company vehicles.
- Provide or arrange training, feedback, and performance evaluations to ensure drivers comply with policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Collaborate with team members to develop project timelines, track progress, and ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Ensure departmental goals are met and aligned with company objectives.
- Maintain accurate records and reports.
- Perform a minimum of 40 OBA’s per month.
- Conduct ride-along evaluations as scheduled.
- Follow up on NSC as required.
- Manage equipment inventory.
- Provide ongoing coaching.
- Be on call 24/7 for emergencies.
Requirements:
- Valid Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
- 2–3 years of supervisory experience, preferably in the trucking industry.
- Ability to perform pre- and post-trip inspections and conduct accident investigations.
- Operations, transportation, or waste management experience preferred.
- First Aid Certification is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of Hours of Service (HOS) regulations is mandatory.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and meet tight deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite (spreadsheets, databases, word processing).
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including some travel.
Ideal Candidate:
- 5 years of AZ driving experience.
- Extensive knowledge of Hours of Service regulations.
- Flexible hours and ability to stay overnight when required.
- Mechanically inclined (somewhat).
- Problem solver with the ability to think on their feet.
