Job summary

The City of Markham is seeking a part-time Museum Program Assistant to support instructors in preparing, organizing and delivering programs for children to adults, and assist with birthday parties. Hours will vary with seasons and peak periods, including evenings and weekends.

Under supervision of the Program Instructor, you will help with scheduling, participant safety, materials setup, and communication. Strong teamwork and flexibility are essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in customer service preferred.
  • Standard First Aid OR CPR-C with AED certification.
  • HIGH FIVE Healthy Child Development certification is required.
  • Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) clearance required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Outlook.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Program Instructors with preparation, organization and delivery of museum programs.
  • Support scheduling and attendance tracking against the master schedule.
  • Advise participants of upcoming events, changes or cancellations.
  • Help ensure participant safety and manage equipment setup and cleanup.
  • Provide staff support for special events as needed.
  • Follow program guidelines to maintain a safe, positive learning environment.

Job Summary

Responsible for assisting Program Instructors with all aspects of preparation, organization and delivery of Museum programs for children through to adults while contributing to a positive and safe environment for all participants and peers. As well, as assisting with the delivery of Museum programmed children’s birthday parties. Be advised these hours will fluctuate depending on seasons and peak periods/events and will include evenings and weekends.

Key Duties And Responsibilities
  • Under direction from a Program Instructor, assists with the preparation, organization and delivery of museum programs. According to a plan from the Program Coordinator or program instructor, will assist with specific programs while creating a fun, safe and positive learning environment. This position may assist by taking half of the class or whole group, seeking guidance from the Program Instructor or Program Coordinator on implementation of programs and activities;
  • Assists Program Instructors with scheduling issues e.g. cross referencing group arrivals with master schedule and reporting participant numbers, absentees and any irregularities to the Program Coordinator;
  • Under the direction of Program Instructor, advises program participants of upcoming events, program changes or cancellations;
  • Helps ensures safety of program participants and raises any concerns to the program instructors
  • Refers any program decisions to the Program Coordinator;
  • In consultation with Program Instructors, advises Program Coordinator of any customer service issues, complaints or inquiries;
  • For children's classes, checks and ensures all participant emergency and medical information is accurate on the class list and participant forms;
  • Assists Program Instructors with set-up and clean-up of all equipment and supplies need for programs and birthday parties;
  • As per direction from Program Instructor, checks the site, equipment and supplies to ensure they are appropriate to the activity and environment to reduce and minimize risk to other staff and participants;
  • Provide staff support for special events in a variety of roles.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned
Required Skills & Competencies
  • Attending or completion of high school
  • Prior experience serving the public, customer service training preferred
  • Current certifications in Standard First Aid OR Intermediate First Aid with CPR 'C' and AED
  • HIGH FIVE Healthy Child Development is required
  • Must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal and communication skills and above average organizational and follow-up skills required
  • Strong time management, multi-tasking and above average organizational and follow-up skills required
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, database management, etc.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver's License is an asset
