Job summary

The City of Markham is seeking a Ballroom Program Instructor to lead dance classes for diverse ages at Angus Glen Community Centre. You will plan and deliver engaging lessons, supervise participants of various abilities, and foster a positive community environment.

Evenings and weekends are required; you will coordinate with the Supervisor/Coordinator and ensure safety and equipment readiness. Prior certification and one year of teaching experience are expected.

Qualifications

• Minimum of one year prior experience instructing Ballroom dance classes.
• Training or applicable certification in Ballroom dance is required.
• Current certifications in First Aid/CPR AED are required.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates, leads and supervises Ballroom dance classes.
• Instruct students in multiple ballroom styles including Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, and others.
• Organizes lesson plans for progressive learning tailored to each group's abilities.
• Conducts classes, plans routines and selects appropriate music.
• Sets up equipment and ensures its return in good condition.
• Keeps attendance records and notifies participants of changes or cancellations.
• Communicates with Supervisor/Coordinator about issues and feedback.
• Ensures safety procedures and proper use of facilities.

Must be available for various evenings and weekends throughout the week and be willing to occasionally cover shifts for staff absences.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Community Program Supervisor/Coordinator, the Ballroom Program Instructor will be responsible for planning, organizing, instructing and leading Ballroom dance classes for various ages and abilities.

The candidate will also be responsible for the training and supervision of a variety of participants of various ages and physical abilities and developing a program that recognizes their capabilities within a community recreation environment. They will also help motivate participants to achieve their goals and confidence, while ensuring a positive and safe environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Facilitates, leads and supervises Ballroom dance classes.
• Instruct students in ballroom dance styles including Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Swing, Salsa, and other social dances
• Organizes and writes lesson plans to facilitate progressive learning and specific to the abilities of each group.
• Conducts classes and plans routines and chooses appropriate music.
• Sets up and monitors class equipment and ensures its’ return in good condition.
• Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, reporting to the Supervisor Coordinator any items needing replacement.
• Keeps attendance records and checks with participants who have extended absences.
• Ensures all program participants are aware of upcoming events, program changes or cancellations. Advises participants on program/class procedures and policies, as appropriate.
• Distributes handouts and/or program evaluations, answers questions from participants after each session, assists in performing follow up communications with participants as required.
• Advises Supervisor/Coordinator of any customer service issues, complaints or inquiries.
• Unlocks and locks facilities as required.
• Ensures the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment to reduce and minimize risk to other staff and participants.

Required Qualifications and Competencies

• Minimum of one year prior experience instructing various types of Ballroom dance classes.
• Training or applicable certification in Ballroom dance is required.
• Current certifications in Standard First Aid OR Intermediate First Aid with CPR C and AED
• Ability to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends.
• Minimum age of 16 years of old at the start of employment
• Experience working with a variety of clients and ages.
• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
• Excellent verbal/written communications skills, leadership skills, customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.
• The ability to work effectively with a wide range of fitness levels in a diverse community.
