Job summary

The High Prairie School Division is seeking an Educational Assistant for Kinuso School, serving students from kindergarten through Grade 12. Kinuso School offers arts, education, and extracurricular activities and partners with community programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in implementing educational and therapy programs for students with diverse needs.
  • Provide data for student evaluation and monitor progress.
  • Alert teachers to any special circumstances regarding a student.
  • Assist with large or small groups or individual students.
  • Support classroom discipline as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with field trips and off-campus activities.
  • Adapt activities to student capabilities and encourage independence.
  • Monitor safety and behavior in class and on the playground.
  • Prepare instructional materials and set out supplies.

Kinuso School

Kinuso School is nestled in the Hamlet of Kinuso and is located 48 kilometres west of Slave Lake on the southern shores of Lesser Slave Lake. We are proud to be a hub in a region that is home to a varied and diverse population with rich cultures and backgrounds. The school serves 250 students from kindergarten to Grade 12 and has 37 staff members. Kinuso School offers programming in the arts, education, and extracurricular activities. We are happy to house the community library. Our public functions (annual Remembrance Day Ceremony, Italian Knights Supper and celebratory ceremonies), fundraisers and athletic events are well attended and supported by our families and community stakeholders. Our students continue to develop and demonstrate strong leadership through Student Leadership Council and Youth Truth and Reconciliation Council. We are honoured and grateful for our partnership with the Swan River Knowledge Keepers, and the land based learning experiences they are generously sharing with us.

Job Description:

Primary Function:Assist teachers in the implementation of educational and therapy programs that address physical, mental,behavioural, health and safety needs of students.

Performance Responsibilities:
  • Implement Individual Program Plans under the supervision and direction of the teacher;
  • Assist the teacher in providing data for student evaluation;
  • Alert teacher to any special circumstances regarding the student;
  • Assist with large, small groups or individual students;
  • Comply with and assist in teacher's methods of maintaining classroom discipline;
  • Assist with field trips;
  • Adapt classroom activities to the capabilities of the student. Encourage the student to function as a member of the group by involving other students in activities and encouraging independence and self-help skills;
  • Monitor the student in class and on the playground to prevent physical danger and reinforce social and learningbehaviours. Participate in travel, training and off-campus activities;
  • Accompany the student to and from the bus, taxi, etc. Escort student on bus, taxi, etc.;
  • Conduct prescribed therapeutic and exercise programs for physically exceptional students;
  • Attend to personal needs of students with disabilitiesin the program, e.g. feeding, toileting, general physical care to maintain comfort. Secure students in walkers or other equipment, move or position students, etc.;
  • Participate in all facets of the program designed to develop the language, independence, mobility and self-help skills of severely handicapped students, under the direction of the teacher or multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Assist in maintaining individual student's progress records for review and program planning. Provide observations on progress,behavioursas required and work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team as required;
  • Prepare instructional material under the teacher's direction;
  • Prepare and set out lesson supplies and equipment;
  • Clean and store materials and equipment after use;
  • Display student's work and prepare bulletin board displays;
  • Mark objective lists and routine exercises;
  • Continues to improve expertise and job-related skills; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the teacher/Principal.
