Qualifications

  • Valid First Aid and CPR certificates
  • Educational Assistant Diploma or Certificate an asset
  • Valid Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) certificate is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Provides instructional assistance to individual or small groups of students requiring adapted instruction; reinforces skills identified by teachers.
  • Assists students with assignments, study, organizational and vocational skills; helps maintain focus on tasks.
  • Implements daily programming including clinical programs and adapts materials as required for instructional purposes.
  • Assists with development and implementation of IEPs and IBPs; supports speech/language therapy and activity adaptations.
  • Provides personal care, mobility assistance and supervision during school activities and field trips.
  • Monitors and records student progress and reports to teachers; participates in team meetings.

Under the supervision and direction of the Principal and/or designate, the Educational Assistant D is responsible for providing both instructional and general assistance to individual or small groups of students in designated Inclusion Support Services programs and integrated settings, for students who are severely physically, behaviourally, mentally and/or emotionally challenged; providing assistance to teachers as required; supervising students as required; and other various duties.

Educational Assistant D - 6.0 hours per day

Under the supervision and direction of the Principal and/or designate, the Educational Assistant D is responsible for providing both instructional and general assistance to individual or small groups of students in designated Inclusion Support Services programs and integrated settings, for students who are severely physically, behaviourally, mentally and/or emotionally challenged; providing assistance to teachers as required; supervising students as required; and other various duties.

Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Provides instructional assistance to individual or small groups of students who require individual adapted and/or modified instructional programs to meet educational and behavioural outcomes; assists with the general reinforcement of skills identified by the teacher/inclusive education resource teacher. Assists students in completing assignments and tasks and developing their study/vocational skills and organizational skills; assists student in remaining focused on tasks; and follows up on assignments as required. Implements daily programming for students including clinical programs; under the direction of the teacher, modifies and/or adapts classroom materials as required for instructional purposes. Assists with the organization and arrangement of special devices and instructional materials.

Provides general assistance to individual or small groups of students as required. Assists with speech/language therapy as required. Assists with the implementation of Individual Educational Plans (IEP’s) and Behaviour Intervention Plans (IBP’s) and reinforcement of targeted goals. As directed by physiotherapist, performs simple physiotherapy exercises for students, other various exercises as required. Provides assistance with physical movement activities including weight training, walking, bike riding and swimming; provides assistance to students during Physical Education classes. Provides assistance with the development of gross motor skills by engaging in activities such as stair climbing, opening doors, and ball throwing. Adapts environment to accommodate wheelchairs, as required; may assist students with chair-to-chair and chair-to-floor equipment transfers; and escorts students during out-of-school events. Provides life skills instructions to students including personal grooming, bus training, community experience and work experience. Assists with personal care and hygiene of students including toileting, dressing, undressing, feeding, and laundry; lifts and moves students, as required. Assists in preparation of lunches and snacks; may feed or assist in feeding student(s) as required. Ensures students are dressed appropriately before participating in outdoor recesses.

Provides assistance to teachers as required. Observes and records student progress, behaviour, and performance; and reports observations to teachers. Maintains records; organizes and maintains files and materials for students. Attends and participates in team meetings as required. Provides assistance during Field Days, Field Trips and other special events.

Supervises students during the temporary absence of a teacher, during lunches, noon hour activities, and recesses; monitors small groups during academic and instructional sessions. Supervises designated student(s) as required; and encourages interaction amongst students.

Supervises students during the loading and unloading and riding of buses; ensures students in wheelchairs board and disembark transit vehicle safely. Monitors and assists with controlling disruptive behaviour in and out of classrooms and school activities which may require student safety interventions in crisis situations and/or removal from classroom; applies and reinforces behaviour management procedures and strategies identified by teachers.

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties including, administering First Aid to students and completing accident reports as required; administering necessary medications in accordance with established guidelines; performing approved health care procedures for identified student(s) as required; and may provide translation services for students, school and parents as required.

Performs other related duties within this classification and related classifications not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Assistant Diploma or Certificate an asset
