The Opportunity

The Director, Business Development and Financial Analysis is responsible for advising business leaders on negotiations involving business valuations, financial modeling, financing, and risk management related to revenue-generating activities. The role involves providing recommendations on investments, fair value assessments, and managing financial risks throughout the lifecycle of business investments or relationships, ensuring McMaster’s financial interests are protected and maximized.

Accountabilities

  1. Develop and oversee governance frameworks for capital and financing requests.
  2. Collaborate across departments to optimize resource utilization.
  3. Advise leaders to support cross-functional collaboration, ensuring agreements and transactions align with financial and risk objectives to diversify revenue streams.
  4. Coordinate with tax, legal, governance, finance, and risk teams to evaluate capital and financing requests supporting various business units and investments.
  5. Oversee financial analysis and deal terms for negotiations with third parties, investors, and banks to secure optimal value and pricing.
  6. Conduct financial and valuation modeling, providing analytical support to refine business cases.
  7. Support internal business valuation and challenge third-party valuations to ensure favorable outcomes for McMaster.
  8. Prepare and review data rooms and data files for valuation analyses, documenting assumptions clearly.
  9. Create business cases and presentations to obtain governance approval for new investments and financing opportunities.
  10. Assess appropriate business structures for deals, such as joint ventures, partnerships, or debt arrangements.
  11. Provide analytical support to senior leadership, including the Treasurer and Chief Investment Officer.
  12. Build relationships with senior leaders, legal, and industry peers to facilitate transactions and share best practices.
  13. Lead, manage, and motivate teams of professionals.

Education & Experience

  • MBA or undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business Administration, or equivalent.
  • CPA or CBV certification, or working towards it.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in complex public or private sector environments; university or non-profit experience is an asset.
