GCS is seeking a competent and experienced Horizontal Directional Drilling Locator for telecom installation projects in the Red Deer area. The ideal candidates will have relevant experience and a positive attitude toward working in demanding environments with long hours.

Responsibilities
- Perform physical activities requiring significant use of arms, legs, and whole-body exertion, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, and handling materials.
- Read and interpret drawings, construct forms, and install rebar reinforcement according to project specifications.
- Execute field projects based on instructions from clients, project managers, and field supervisors.
- Read and interpret drawings, locate diagrams, and perform necessary work.
- Use locating devices throughout the drilling process.
- Verify drill head passage through daylighted sight holes.
- Collaborate with the driller to complete directional drill shots for placing fibre conduit or other utilities.
- Conduct walk-throughs of drill shots with the drilling foreman before starting work.
- Drill according to specifications and locates, following the designated bore path.
- Maintain constant communication with the driller via radio.
- Participate in site safety activities, including pre-job orientations, toolbox meetings, and safety meetings.
- Complete daily safety documentation such as FLHAs and HDD Ground Disturbance Checklists.
- Ensure permits are valid and complete drilling-specific documentation.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Adhere to all HSE and quality management procedures.
- Perform remediation tasks as required.
- Assist with other drilling and labor tasks as needed.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of HDD locating experience.
- Knowledge of and experience working with underground utilities.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, locates, and diagrams.
- Experience with telecom, fibre, and hydro vacuum operations is an asset.
- Experience with Ditch Witch / Subsite equipment for HDD scopes.
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions.
- Ability to adapt to different soil conditions and topography during drilling.
- Quick thinker and able to react to changing conditions.
- Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Safety-conscious attitude is essential.
- Ability to perform preventative maintenance and maintain equipment diligently.
- Good judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Physically capable of lifting over 50 lbs.
- Strong work ethic.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and repetitive tasks.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Required Certificates
- Ground Disturbance Level 2 training certification.
