Black & McDonald’s Calgary Utilities team is growing! If you are a committed and collaborative professional looking to contribute to a hard-working, innovative team, this opportunity is for you.

Reporting to the Project Manager or their designate, the Directional Drill Operator will operate Vermeer Directional Drills, Locating Systems, Mixing Systems, and Commercial Vehicles used in underground utility installation. The Locator / Directional Drill Operator is responsible for the safe operation and basic maintenance of the organization’s directional drilling equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Safely operate the directional drill in the installation of underground utilities.
2. Operate directional drill in residential areas.
3. Ensure the safe operation and basic maintenance of equipment.
4. Read and interpret blueprints, stakes, and signage.
5. Coordinate daily activities of equipment with drivers and other operators.
6. Perform and log pre-operation safety inspections, including fueling and greasing, to maintain safe and optimal operation.

Work Experience Requirements:

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience operating Horizontal Directional Drill Rigs, specifically Vermeer D20 x 22 Series 3 or Vermeer 24X40.

Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements:

• Class 1 (or 3) driver’s license with Air Brakes endorsement.
• Valid Alberta Driver’s License with a clean 3-year driving abstract.
• Ability to pass a Drug & Alcohol test.
• Valid CSTS/Ground Disturbance Safety Ticket.
• Willingness to travel out of town if required.

Construction safety certifications such as Confined Space Awareness/Rescue, Fall Arrest, WHMIS, and First Aid are assets.
