The Opportunity

McElhanney has a new opportunity for a Planner to join our growing team on Vancouver Island. Supporting vibrant, livable communities is a key focus of McElhanney across Western Canada, and our Planning teams are active in laying the groundwork for complex, inter-disciplinary projects that shape the way we live. We are looking for Planners to help grow our Planning practice on Vancouver Island and as support for the company throughout BC. The successful individual will be a part of a diverse team of professionals focusing on a range of public and private sector planning projects.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  1. Supporting and helping build McElhanney’s planning practice on Vancouver Island and coordinating with survey, engineering and planning teams in other branches to ensure great project delivery.
  2. Business development with new, existing, and key clients.
  3. Liaising and developing strategic partnerships with clients, project stakeholders, various levels of government and sub-consultants.
  4. Professional project management and execution of planning projects.
  5. Supervise and provide direction to technical and professional staff, as required.

What You’ll Bring:
  1. 5 years community planning experience, preferably with a background in consulting.
  2. Master’s Degree in community planning, urban design, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Project Management experience.
  4. Experience in development approvals and municipal development processes.
  5. Experience with local government policy and bylaw development.
  6. A strong understanding of provincial planning legislation, and a willingness to learn surrounding local government policies and bylaw requirements.
  7. Strong verbal and written communication expertise.
  8. Ability to prepare information and host public engagement opportunities.
  9. Effective time management skills with the ability to function in a high volume, challenging environment.
  10. Experience working in a First Nations planning environment an asset.
  11. Experience with budget tracking an asset.
  12. Graphic and CAD skills an asset.
  13. Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners.
  14. A valid driver’s license is required.
