Job summary

British Columbia Public School Employers' Association | Make a Future - Careers in BC Education seeks an Early Childhood Educator Assistant for the Nakusp area. The role reports to the Child Care Manager and District Lead and focuses on supervising and caring for children aged 0-5 in the SD10 program.

You will support developmentally appropriate activities, maintain records, and collaborate with staff, families and community partners while complying with safety policies and licensing

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 with a recognized ECE-related training program.
  • Current ECE Assistant license to practice in BC.
  • Valid Child Care First Aid Certificate.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in licensed child care.
  • WHMIS certification is required.
  • Understanding of BC early learning frameworks is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with age-appropriate programming for children 0–5 years.
  • Guide children in daily activities and promote positive social interactions.
  • Maintain attendance records and daily plans.
  • Record and report accidents promptly to supervisors.
  • Provide diapering and toilet training as needed.
  • Ensure confidentiality and safety compliance.

Job description

Early Childhood Educator (ECE) - Assistant

The Early Childhood Educator Assistant reports to the Child Care Manager and the District Lead for the Nakusp Early Learning Child Care Centre and works collaboratively with the district/early learning team. The role of the Early Childhood Educator Assistant is to supervise and care for children registered in SD10's child care program, to create a secure and culturally appropriate environment, to observe and monitor the health and safety of the children, and to provide child care programming that supports all aspects of the children's learning and development.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with the implementation of age-appropriate programming for children ages 0-5 years.
  • Guide and assist children in daily activities while fostering and encouraging positive social interactions among students.
  • Establish positive working relationships with school staff, community partners, families, and children.
  • Ensure appropriate records of attendance, all daily plans and activities.
  • Ensure all accidents/incidents are recorded and reported in a timely manner to the Child Care Manager and/or District Lead.
  • Provide diapering care and toilet training.
  • Ensure confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures, including safety requirements and emergency preparedness.
  • Establish reasonable behaviour expectations consistent with the Centre's policies and program objectives.
  • Assist with the preparation of snacks and meals for children in accordance with the program objectives.
  • Maintain equipment and assist in general housekeeping requirements.
  • Understand and act in accordance with relevant policies and procedures from the school, district, Ministry of Education, Child Care Licensing Regulation, and WorkSafeBC.
  • Perform other job-related duties as directed by the Child Care Manager or District Lead for the NELCCC.
Required Qualifications and experience
  • Grade 12 plus successful completion of at least one course of a basic early childhood education training program through a recognized educational institution in child development, child guidance, or child health, safety and nutrition.
  • Current ECE Assistant license to practice in the Province of British Columbia.
  • A valid Child Care First Aid Certificate.
  • A minimum of 1 year of recent experience within a licensed child care setting.
  • Experience with implementing quality early learning programming.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong communication skills (verbal, written and electronic formats) and ability to work as part of a team with colleagues, parents and children.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate.
Desired Qualifications and experience
  • Current Food Safe Level 1 Certificate.
  • Related training in supporting children with diverse abilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the British Columbia Early Learning Framework and the Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care Framework.
  • Knowledge of Truth and Reconciliation and its application in Early Years settings and a commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.
