The Canadian Armed Forces is seeking Geomatics Technicians to capture and manage geospatial data supporting military operations. This role offers comprehensive training and opportunities for career advancement across various bases in Canada, with a focus on map production and geospatial analysis. Candidates will receive full salary, medical care, and paid vacation during training.
As a member of the military, Geomatics Technicians capture, analyze, process, present, disseminate, and manage geospatial data to support the operations of the Canadian Government, especially the Navy, the Army, the Air Force, and Special Forces.
Geomatics Technicians are members of the Military Engineering Branch of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Their primary responsibilities include:
Geomatics Technicians are specialists who are members of the Army but may support all CAF exercises and operations, including those led by the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and Canadian Special Forces. They support other Government of Canada work and various Allies. Most work is conducted in an office environment within Canada, using high-tech computer workstations and specialized software. They are employed across Navy, Army, Air Force, and Special Forces units, training in garrison and in the field, and deploying on operations. Opportunities for international postings and participation in national and international exercises and training are available throughout their careers.
If you choose a career in the Regular Force as a Geomatics Technician, after completing all required training, you will be assigned to your first posting. Postings are available at most major bases across the country, offering exciting work supporting planning, exercises, operations, and intelligence.
No prior work experience or related skills are required. CAF recruiters can assist in determining if your interests and attributes align with this occupation.
The minimum education requirement is the completion of Grade 11 or Quebec Secondary 5, including Grade 11 Applied Math or Math 426 in Quebec. Foreign education may be accepted.
Through the Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Program (NCMSTEP), the CAF pays successful recruits to attend a diploma program at an approved Canadian college. Students attend basic training and on-the-job training during summer months, receive full salary, medical and dental care, and paid vacation in exchange for a service commitment. Applicants must apply to both the CAF and the college.
The initial training is the Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, which provides core skills and knowledge common to all trades. The training emphasizes maintaining physical fitness, making it physically demanding.
