Program Overview – Child Care & Family Services (1094 Gerrard Street E, 70 Woodfield Road)
The ECA casual staff are responsible for caring for children in group settings, assisting team members in planning, supervising, and implementing daily programs. This role involves providing guidance, encouragement, and support to children, families, staff, students, and volunteers, while being flexible, resourceful, sensitive, and respectful of individual needs.
What You Will Do
- Guide and care for children in groups, assist in planning and implementing daily programs aligned with Ministry of Education policies, pedagogy, and curriculum, as well as City of Toronto’s Quality Care Requirements.
- Adhere to policies of the Child Care & Family Services Unit and WoodGreen, complying with the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014, and City of Toronto’s AQI, including maintaining legal staff:child ratios and collaborating with casual staff during absences.
- Set reasonable limits based on developmental stages, providing appropriate guidance and support individually and in groups, including additional support when needed.
- Recognize, address, and report unusual behaviors to the Manager, collaborating with professionals and resources as necessary.
- Work as part of a team, participating in daily program activities with other staff.
- Record daily attendance, manage medical information, and report concerns appropriately.
- Ensure children’s safety, health, and hygiene, including responding to emergencies, monitoring health concerns, maintaining program safety, assisting with incident reports, and following emergency procedures.
- Safely escort children during outdoor activities and contribute to supervision during outings.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians, providing feedback, assessments, and developmental updates.
- Maintain equipment and furnishings, inform management of needs, and assist with housekeeping and equipment assessments.
- Keep the learning environment organized, attractive, and conducive to learning.
- Provide supervision at all times, work scheduled shifts to meet ratios, and adapt to shift changes.
- Report signs of abuse to authorities.
- Build effective communication and relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including community resources.
- Check outdoor facilities for safety, report hazards, and ensure cleanliness.
- Perform housekeeping duties such as cleaning, disinfecting, preparing meals, and laundry.
What You Bring to the Team
- Early Childhood Assistant Certificate or completion of one year of Early Childhood Education at a recognized Ontario College.
- Experience in licensed childcare, including practicum placements.
- Valid Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification.
- Up-to-date health assessment, immunizations, and TB test.
