Position Description:

Position Title: Research MRI Technologist

Immediate Supervisor: Manager, Brain Imaging Centre

Reporting Supervisor: Director, Clinical Research Administration, IMHR

Start date: November 2024

Contract: Casual, Evenings

Salary Range: $36.75 to $51.79 hourly (commensurate with experience)

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Institute for Mental Health Research (IMHR) at The Royal Ottawa Hospital specializes in mental health research across a variety of areas including mood disorders, suicide prevention, sleep disorders, schizophrenia, stress and trauma, and youth mental health. The Royal's Brain Imaging Centre (BIC) is a state-of-the art research facility featuring a PET/MRI scanner, the first of its kind in Canada dedicated solely to support mental health and neuroscience research.

As an integral member of the team, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (technologists, physicists, IT, radiochemist) to provide support for scientific research using MRI as assigned based on research funding and needs. This position will offer opportunities for career growth and continuing education. We will consider applicants with any range of experience, including new graduates.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Imaging (90%):
  • Operate a 3T PET/MRI scanner for human imaging following the CMRTO Standards of Practice.
  • Perform image processing activities as required (i.e. processing of images, saving softcopy images, evaluating image quality).
  • Perform basic quality control testing and equipment warm-up procedures.
  • Ensure proper participant preparation for examination as required, including MRI safety screening.
  • Explain procedure to participant and establish consent.
  • Must have IV certification. Perform blood draws. Inject MRI contrast media (by hand or via power injector) where applicable.
  • Conduct research related tasks including image reconstruction, phantom experiments, blood metabolite analysis and data acquisition and upload for in clinical trials.
  • Administrative (10%):
    • Support department workflow including scheduling, billing and training.
    • With appropriate radiation safety training, support the PET research program. Follow ALARA principles, receive radioactive materials, perform wipe tests.
    • Review all pertinent documents/manuals annually or as required, including: Technical Protocols, Policies and Procedures, WHIMIS, Emergency Procedures, Infection Control, CMRTO Standards of Practice, CPR.
    • Report all incidents to appropriate personnel and participate in follow-up action as required.
    • Actively participate in in-house education programs.
    • Work under the supervision of the Senior PET/MRI Technologist and the Brain Imaging Centre Manager.

    Qualifications:

    • Registered with the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO) as a Registered Technologist Magnetic Resonance (RTMR).
    • Ability to perform diagnostic imaging procedures (MRI) to professional standards.
    • CPR C certified.
    • Able to lift 50lbs.
    • Experience in a research imaging environment an asset.
    • Spoken and written French an asset.
    • Completion of TCPS 2 and GCP with ICH E6(R2) training an asset.
    • Familiarity with human research study requirements and guidelines an asset.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Good oral and written communication skills.
    • Excellent organization and time management skills. Ability to multi-task.
    • Ability to work independently with minimum direction.
    • Ability to be flexible in order to meet the needs of a variety of research protocols.
    • Enjoys working with research participants.
    • Knowledge about cross-sectional anatomy.
    • Ability to work closely with principal investigators (PI) and their study team.
    • Ability for logical, independent problem solving, and attention to detail and process.
    • Willing to consider working shifts that run into the early evening.
    • Interested in opportunities for cross-training in PET imaging.
