PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To manage the financial operations of the entire agency by : ensuring adequate recording and reporting systems; overseeing annual budget preparations; financial reporting to the Ministry of Children, Community & Social Services (MCCSS) and other key funders; overseeing functions such as accounts payable and receivable, general ledger postings, regulatory remittances and reporting, and payroll. The Controller is responsible for the timely preparation of accounting reports and budgets, and ensuring appropriate accounting controls are in place. The role involves access to and handling of confidential financial information.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Manage the budget process and prepare the annual budget by collaborating with Senior Management and submitting it for approval.
- Oversee agency revenue and expenditures, ensuring adherence to budgets.
- Supervise daily accounting operations, including bank reconciliations, journal entries, and account adjustments.
- Ensure all financial transactions comply with accounting standards and auditor requirements.
- Maintain fiduciary controls to manage financial risks.
- Report and advise the Board and Finance Committee on financial status monthly.
- Prepare financial statements and reports for departments and funders.
- Liaise with the Executive Director, HR, and senior managers on financial issues.
- Monitor cash flow and prepare projections for operational support.
- Manage all reporting for MCCSS and other funders, including year-end reconciliation issues.
- Coordinate with auditors during audits.
- Manage banking and credit card transactions, approve EFT payments, and oversee payroll functions.
- Implement and monitor financial policies, providing staff training as needed.
- Ensure compliance with CRA, MCCSS, and other funders' requirements.
- Manage relationships with banks, suppliers, and service providers.
- Adhere to agency policies, participate in committees, and engage in professional development.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in financial matters.
Qualifications Required
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) with at least 3 years of accounting experience.
- Experience in non-profit accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of accounting software, payroll systems, and relevant legislation.
- Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to detail and confidentiality.
