Job Description
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The role involves continuous quality and safety improvements in all aspects of this position.
Working in the community setting as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Eating Disorder Clinician provides therapeutic counseling to individuals with eating disorders and weight preoccupation, along with their caregivers/families. The role also includes facilitating support groups and promoting community awareness.
Qualifications:
Education, Training, and Experience
- Master's Degree in Social Work, Clinical Counselling, or a related health discipline from an approved institution.
- Post-basic education in clinical counseling.
- Knowledge of available eating disorder services, their interrelationships, and their role in community care.
- Understanding of applicable legislation such as the Mental Health Act.
- At least two years of recent experience working with clients with eating disorders.
- Eligibility for registration with the appropriate Health Regulatory College or licensing body.
- Valid BC Driver's License.
An equivalent level of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities
- Specialized knowledge in current eating disorder treatment practices across all ages.
- Knowledge of evidence-based intervention strategies for children, youth, families, and adults.
- Ability to conduct client assessments using standardized mental health and eating disorder tools.
- Therapeutic skills in case management, individual, and group therapy for clients with various mental health disorders, including eating disorders.
- Ability to collaborate with medical professionals, multidisciplinary teams, and tertiary centers for client treatment.
- Understanding of the physiological impacts and medical risks of eating disorders.
- Effective referral skills, with strong knowledge of community resources and collaboration with community partners.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and teaching abilities.
- Good judgment, observational skills, empathy, and tact.
- Ability to provide culturally sensitive care respecting client rights, values, and preferences.
- Knowledge of non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
- Ability to work independently with initiative and limited supervision.
- Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Skills to promote positive change and foster client independence.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Physical ability to perform job duties.
- Self-awareness, social awareness, and empathy, especially in high-stress situations.
- Proficiency in operating Windows-based software and related equipment.
- Ability to foster good public relations.
