Job summary

Capilano University’s EarthWorks invites a Student Research Assistant to support creative activity, research, and dissemination, working under supervision, on-campus, with an 8 hours/week workload. The role involves literature reviews and assisting with research setups and communication of findings.

You will collaborate with EarthWorks Coordinators and community to plan, organize, and deliver activities that mobilize the EarthWorks network and engage students across disciplines.

Qualifications

• Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Canva/Adobe Design software is preferred.
• Interest in sustainability and interdisciplinary environmental education is an asset.
• Domestic or international student eligibility for on-campus work is required according to Capilano University policies.

Responsibilities

• Attend and support EarthWorks events and activities.
• Participate in weekly meetings with EarthWorks Coordinators.
• Lead planning and promotion of at least one knowledge mobilization event.
• Contribute to a student engagement plan emphasizing autonomy and engagement.
• Disseminate EarthWorks information across platforms (posters, social media, blogs).

The Student Research Assistant, under the supervision and direction of faculty or an administrator, will assist with creative activity, research and scholarship-related activities. Typical duties include literature reviews, assisting with the set-up and preparation of research activities, publications and dissemination of research findings through various forms of scholarly engagement and communication, on and off campus.

The EarthWorks collective includes faculty, students, employees, and staff at Capilano University from a broad range of disciplines and backgrounds. Our mandate is to bring environmental and sustainability education into the curriculum across the campus through our lecture series and other knowledge mobilization initiatives. Two student Research Assistants (RAs) will engage with the EarthWorks Coordinators and community to collaborate on the planning, organization, and delivery of activities that mobilize the EarthWorks community.

This position is best suited for a student that has a strong sense of academic-professional balance, is able to confidently commit to a consistent 8 hours a week workload, is on campus regularly, and has experience working independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Attendance at and support of all EarthWorks Events
• Attending weekly meetings with EarthWorks Faculty Coordinators
• Leading the planning and promotion of at least one knowledge mobilization event
• Contributing to a student engagement plan that emphasizes student autonomy, engagement and choice in the future of EarthWorks
• Engaging with outreach mediums to disseminate information about EarthWorks initiatives across multiple platforms and audiences (poster creation, social media, blog posts, knowledge mobilization of research)

SKILLS REQUIRED

• Strong communication and writing skills
• Ability to work independently when needed and also in a team environment
• Experience with Microsoft Office suite (Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint), navigating social media platforms, Canva or Adobe Design Suite
• Interest in issues of sustainability and interdisciplinary environmental education; experience in this area is an asset

REQUIREMENTS

• Domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of two or more (6 credits) courses at Capilano University throughout the work term
• International student in Fall and Winter must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of 9 credits at Capilano University throughout the work term; a valid Study Permit, an existing Off-Campus Work Permit, and an original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
• International student in Summer must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of 9 credits at Capilano University, throughout the Summer term; OR must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of 3 credits in the Summer term AND must have been enrolled in at least 9 credits for each of the preceding Fall and Winter terms; OR must have been enrolled in full-time studies with a minimum of 9 credits for the Winter term AND must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of 3 credits in the Summer term; OR have proof of enrollment in full-time studies as an international student at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C., a valid Study Permit, an existing Off-Campus Work Permit, and an original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
• Student must be in good standing with the University (good standing is defined as having no current notations regarding academic standing, student conducts or outstanding fees)
• Minimum GPA of 2.0
