Overview
As a member of the military, Nurse Practitioners provide care and treatment to ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and supported populations in a primary and tertiary care environment in Canada and while on operation.
Work within a collaborative practice model with other members of the healthcare team and lead the delivery of health services within your area of practice. Opportunities include :
Work environment
As a Nurse Practitioner in the Primary Reserve Force, you will enroll through a specific Reserve unit. Outside of training, your Reserve unit will be your workplace on a part-time basis, with no obligation to relocate. Typically, you work one night per week and some weekends, with possibilities for full-time employment. During deployments, you will live and work in the same environment as CAF members.
If you choose a career in the Regular Force, after training, you will be assigned to a base, with potential relocations. Joining the Primary Reserve allows you to work part-time without relocating outside your Reserve unit.
Entry plans
If you already have a university degree, a license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Canada, and civilian experience, the CAF may place you directly into a Nurse Practitioner role after evaluation. You may need to complete additional courses. Contact a Canadian Forces Health Services Recruiter : HSRecruiting-RecrutementSS@forces.gc.ca.
Training
After Rank Qualification Lieutenant training, civilian Nurse Practitioners will complete a military healthcare provider course at the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre in Borden, Ontario. Opportunities for specialization include Aviation Medicine, Dive Medicine, and Submarine Medicine.
Part-time options
Reserve Force Nurse Practitioners are trained to the same standards as Regular Force counterparts. Civilian experience should reflect employment as a Nurse Practitioner in Adult Primary or Acute Care. For matching experience, contact HSRecruiting-RecrutementSS@forces.gc.ca.
