Key Responsibilities

The Chief Engineer ensures all machinery on board is maintained in good working order and operates machinery during operations as required.

Specific Responsibilities Include
  • Carrying out operational services to ships safely and responsibly.
  • Ensuring the safe operation of vessels, engines, generators, and related machinery.
  • Maintaining all machinery (deck and engine) to operational standards.
  • Owning the vessel's machinery spaces, keeping the engine room clean, tidy, and hazard-free.
  • Reporting breakdowns or faults to the Master and Superintendent Engineer and coordinating repairs.
  • Performing routine maintenance and repairs, ensuring compliance with the Planned Maintenance System.
  • Managing sufficient lube oils and bunkers for operations.
  • Conducting ship husbandry and Health & Safety checks, reporting faults.
  • Maintaining accurate paperwork according to statutory and regulatory guidelines.
  • Supervising and training engineering staff.
  • Assisting in dry-docking and surveys, ensuring timely completion.
  • Advising the Master on vessel defects, maintaining defect logs, and liaising with the Superintendent for prioritization.
  • Building relationships with customers, pilots, port authorities, and agents, participating in operational meetings.
  • Owning all vessel areas and undertaking engineer responsibilities as needed.
  • Performing duties professionally, responsibly, and flexibly to meet operational requirements.
  • Collaborating as part of a small team, accepting inter-departmental duties.
  • Completing mandatory training for company and personal development.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the company in a flexible manner.
Qualifications
Who we are looking for
  • Minimum STCW III/3 Chief Engineer certification.
  • Ability to analyze engineering situations and prepare detailed reports.
  • Fault diagnosis and rectification skills for major machinery.
  • Team management and responsibility allocation skills.
  • Harbour or terminal towage experience preferred.
  • Strong administrative and computer skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
