Foothills Nordic Ski Club (FNSC) is looking for a values-driven, community-oriented General Manager to guide our organization into its next chapter of growth and sustainability. This is your opportunity to help shape the future of one of Canada’s most respected Nordic ski clubs and make a difference in the lives of athletes, families, and volunteers

The General Manager will advance the Club’s mission by coordinating operations, stewarding financial and human resources, and ensuring a high-quality experience for members, volunteers, and partners. As the senior leader of the Club, you’ll oversee day-to-day operations, and work hand-in-hand with our Board and coaching team to implement the strategic plan and lead the delivery of high-quality programs grounded in excellence, inclusion, and lifelong participation.

Please Note : This is a part-time (24+ / week), flexible, work from home opportunity. In-person meetings are held in Calgary and Canmore with events in both locations.

Key Responsibilities :

Strategic Leadership and Governance

  • Implement the Club’s strategic plan and report progress to the Board
  • Ensure alignment across programs, operations, and member services
  • Provide insight and recommendations to support effective Board governance

Operational Management

  • Oversee scheduling, registration, communications, and program logistics
  • Strengthen relationships with key venues such as the Canmore Nordic Centre and City of Calgary
  • Identify and implement systems that improve efficiency and member experience

People and Volunteer Leadership

  • Recruit, onboard, and support volunteers across the organization
  • Supervise and support contractors, staff, and key volunteer leads
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive culture across all levels

Community and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the public face of the Club with members, partners, and funders
  • Respond to member inquiries with professionalism and care
  • Lead internal and external communications, including newsletters and upd
  • Lead the development of the annual budget for Board approval and manage day-to-day financial operations in alignment with approved budgets
  • Track expenses, cash flow, and financial reporting
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial practices and audits

Fundraising and Sponsorship

  • Pursue grants, sponsorships, and fundraising opportunities
  • Maintain strong relationships with sponsors and funding agencies
  • Contribute to the development of a multi-year funding and sustainability plan

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Ensure Safe Sport principles and child protection policies are upheld
  • Maintain organizational policies aligned with current legislation and best practices
  • Lead incident response and ensure adequate insurance coverage

What You Bring :

  • At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience. Experience in non-profit, sport, recreation, or community organizations is an asset
  • Experience managing operations, programs, and finances at a strategic and practical level
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and Boards
  • Comfort with a hands-on leadership style and a willingness to pitch in
  • Experience with fundraising, sponsorships, or grant writing is an asset
  • Experience managing competing priorities with clarity and adaptability — shifting gears as needed to respond to unexpected challenges while keeping projects and people aligned and moving forward
  • Familiarity with Nordic skiing or youth sport development is an asset

About Us :

Incorporated in 1964, Foothills Nordic Ski Club (FNSC) is a not-for-profit ski club operating out of Confederation Park Golf Course in Calgary. FNSC organizes and delivers cross-country and biathlon programming for athletes of all ages and performance levels, beginning as early as 4 years old. Currently, the Club serves over 300 families and over 1,300 individual members. With approximately 100 cross-country and biathlon coaches (both paid and volunteer) and over 200 active volunteers, the Club’s initiatives include the staging of major events and races in Calgary and the Bo w Valley. Foothills is an 8-time Canadian national cross-country aggregate club champion, and is a member of Nordiq Canada, Nordiq Alberta, Biathlon Canada, and Biathlon Alberta.

FNSC is in the process of transitioning its operations from a highly volunteer-dependent, board-operated and governed organization to include staffed key positions to optimize the sustainability and continued success of the Club.
