Position Summary:
The Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Systems Test Engineer will be responsible for conducting and leading testing activities for electric vehicle and energy storage systems at the module and pack level. The engineer will adhere to all TÜV SÜD policies and procedures outlined in various Corporate Policies and the Employee Handbook.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct tests such as passive propagation, external short circuit, overcharge, over discharge, over temperature, cycling requirements, drop testing, rollover, thermal shock, immersion, crush, post-test tear down, and other relevant tests on electric vehicle and energy storage systems.
- Document all test results using monitoring sheets, technical reports, processed data, photographs, and videos.
- Utilize instruments and equipment including battery cyclers, thermocouples, thermistors, RTDs, infrared cameras, multimeters, custom data acquisition setups, pressure transducers, flow meters, CAN bus communications, and surveillance cameras.
- Follow testing standards such as UN 38.3, UN ECE R100.02/03, UL1973, UL2580, IEC 62619, IEC 62620, IEC 60529, ISO 12405, SAEJ 2464, and customer-specific procedures.
- Prepare and adhere to customer project timelines to ensure timely delivery of results and reports.
- Perform product certification assessments and equipment calibrations according to ISO 17025 guidelines.
- Validate calibration schedules and ranges for testing equipment.
- Commission and troubleshoot test equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Lead meetings with clients to discuss project updates and test issues, if applicable.
- Innovate and develop new testing techniques and equipment.
- Ensure consumables meet applicable requirements.
- Support testing staff by providing guidance and resolving issues.
- Perform project reviews and proficiency testing.
- Maintain confidentiality of customer and product information.
- Ensure compliance with work standards, including PPE use.
- Stay updated on product requirements, test procedures, instrumentation, and technology through training and seminars.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in testing electric vehicles and/or energy storage systems.
- Strong technical knowledge in materials electrochemistry, lithium-ion batteries, and advanced battery technologies.
- Experience in test method development, instrumentation, data acquisition, and safety systems.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work effectively in teams.
- Proficiency in data analysis using Python and/or MATLAB.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Familiarity with connected network bus, internet protocols, and RS232.
- Ability to work independently and travel as needed.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to safely operate laboratory equipment.
- Capability to occasionally lift and handle equipment up to 25 lbs.
