Job description

Deric is currently seeking an Automation Designer to join our team in Burlington, Ontario!

Deric is a general contractor specializing in civil works, deep foundations, process mechanics, power supply, instrumentation and control, industrial maintenance, and automation. Our achievements include water and wastewater treatment plants, civil and infrastructure works, process mechanics, automation, instrumentation and control, electrical power, formwork and concreting, port facilities, and more.

Reporting to the Director, the Automation Designer will have the following main responsibilities:

  1. Working with and/or exposed to a wide variety of electrical equipment, including but not limited to:
  • Automation equipment (PLC’s) from major suppliers such as Rockwell, Schneider, Siemens;
  • Variable Frequency Drives from major suppliers such as Rockwell, Schneider, Siemens, ABB, or others;
  • SCADA or HMI equipment from major suppliers;
  • Motor control equipment;
  • Process Instrumentation;
  • Experience working for an EPC, systems integrator, or equipment manufacturer in technical lead roles and project management responsibilities.
  1. The ability to undertake all tasks necessary for the successful completion of the project, including but not limited to:
  • Generating bill of materials and orders from drawings and documents;
  • Design work – generate electrical schematics, panel layouts, network architectures using CAD software (EPLAN or AutoCAD) and Microsoft Office;
  • Programming PLCs, HMIs, and other equipment requiring programming or configuration;
  • Providing guidance to construction trades during installation, reviewing work, generating schedules, and monitoring progress;
  • Leading commissioning activities on site as needed.

In collaboration with the Director:

  1. Preparing budget/cost estimates for small and medium-sized projects, including labor estimates;
  2. Preparing functional specifications for control systems;
  3. Preparing and reviewing technical specifications for equipment;
  4. Preparing and reviewing bid documents for client or construction group bidding;
  5. Interfacing with suppliers for quotes and pricing.

Profile

Qualifications:

  1. 3 to 5 years of experience in a similar role;
  2. Post-secondary degree in Systems Design, Automation, Electrical Engineering, or related field;
  3. Eager to learn about automation;
  4. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  5. Experience on worksites is an asset;
  6. Experience in heavy industry (steel, cement, paper, mining, material handling) or manufacturing (automotive, packaging);
  7. Effective communication skills to liaise with colleagues, contractors, and clients;
  8. Curiosity and perceptiveness to identify opportunities for energy savings, manpower efficiency, and reducing downtime;
  9. Experience designing automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, hydraulics, etc.);
  10. Experience debugging, troubleshooting, and commissioning automation systems, including travel to client sites;
  11. Project management experience involving clients, contractors, and suppliers.
