Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Organizational Health & Safety, the Manager, Health and Safety, supports the organization by responding to inquiries from school and site-based leaders, investigating hazards, overseeing safety programs, and acting as a resource to the Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) Committees. The role involves providing direct support on health and safety matters and building relationships with District personnel as a subject matter expert.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Support and contribute to the development, implementation, evaluation, and administration of health and safety policies, procedures, and programs, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
  2. Serve as the first point of contact for workplace safety inquiries or issues, providing expertise, advice, guidance, and resources, and escalating issues as needed.
  3. Coordinate and deliver safety training courses, including external training such as CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and JOHS Committee training.
  4. Collaborate with site/school JOHS Committees to ensure they meet their mandates as established by the Workers Compensation Act.
  5. Lead the Environmental Violence Risk Assessment Initiative.
  6. Conduct investigations of serious incidents, inspections, assessments, and audits to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  7. Ensure timely incident reporting, investigations, and risk assessments, adhering to the Workers’ Compensation Act and OHS Regulations.
  8. Represent the district in interactions with WorkSafeBC Prevention Officers, responding to inquiries and inspection reports.
  9. Support the Senior Manager, Organizational Health and Safety, and perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Minimum 2-year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field.
  2. At least 5 years of experience in Occupational Health and Safety, including developing safe work procedures, responding to safety incidents, and liaising with JOHS Committees.
  3. Strong investigative, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills.
  4. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  6. Professional accreditation (CRSP, CSP, CIH, ROH) or the ability to obtain these is desirable.
  7. Experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
