Alberta Transportation has awarded Aecon a $595 million contract for the Deerfoot Trail Improvements project, located in Calgary, Alberta. Construction will consist of seven new bridges, additional lanes, and improvements to ramps and interchanges. Construction is scheduled for completion by fall 2027.
Position: Payroll Administrator
The Payroll Administrator is responsible for providing accurate and timely entry of unionized craft employee timesheets along with day-to-day payroll administration. The incumbent will work closely with the project operations, finance, and human resources teams. This is an in-office, contract position ending December 2025 based out of Calgary, AB.
Payroll Responsibilities :
- Develop an understanding and familiarity with the union agreement including wage classifications, union benefits, and scenarios for worker entitlement to allowances.
- Utilize and act as an administrator to the electronic timecard software system (Field Data Capture).
- Provide training to new foremen, superintendents, and project engineers on FDC including occasional troubleshooting where necessary.
- Coordinate timecard approvals / corrections with the superintendents and foremen.
- Accurate and timely submissions of daily timecards to HCM Payroll (Aecon Payroll Team).
- Receive and validate the daily payable time report.
- Crosscheck hours, premiums, and allowances against the union agreement.
- Assist with validation of weekly / biweekly payroll payments.
- Send out electronic paystubs after they are generated as needed.
- Provision of accurate details for quarterly WorkSafeAB submissions.
- Maintain tracking spreadsheets for cost reconciliation.
- Work alongside project controls team to generate labour / productivity reports.
- Coordinate new employee request forms and termination forms with HR team and Corporate Payroll Team.
- Submit new hire, employee changes, and termination forms to HCM for all unionized craft.
- Act as an advisor to the project team on the collective agreement as it relates to payroll practices and shift schedule optimization.
- Resolve payroll and invoicing discrepancies.
- Support all internal and external audits related to payroll.
- Work closely with the Human Resources / Labour Relations and Finance teams.
- Build collaborative working relationships with all levels of the project.
Required Knowledge and Experience :
- Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience with payroll administration, handling a large payroll headcount, or equivalent experience.
- Experience working with unions and reading and interpreting collective agreements.
- Knowledge of payroll principles, practices, and relevant legislation.
- Related post-secondary education and professional payroll work experience within a construction environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience with SAP ERP system and Field Data Capture is an asset.
- Excellent organizational skills to handle multiple deadlines and tasks within a high-pressure environment.

The hourly rate for this position is $25.00 - $28.00 per hour based on a 40-hour work week.
