Aerospace Telecommunications and Information Systems Technician

Overview

As a member of the military, Aerospace Telecommunications and Information Systems Technicians perform, supervise, and direct the repair and maintenance of all types of Air Force & Joint telecommunications and information systems. They also manage and maintain mobile and fixed satellite communications systems, microwave systems, switchboards, cable plants, and all forms of command and control computer systems and networks.

Their primary responsibilities include :

  • Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on radios, radar, data processing, cryptographic, terminal, audio, and video equipment
  • Conducting inspections, performance tests, and adjustments on fixed and mobile telecommunications equipment
  • Performing repairs, overhaul, and support maintenance on telecommunications equipment
  • Installing and conducting acceptance tests
  • Coordinating with command levels and functional groups, including base personnel
  • Maintaining and advising on the maintenance of electromechanical and refrigeration systems for telecommunications equipment
  • Deploying as part of various Air Force units, including support and radar squadrons
  • Managing the lifecycle of telecommunications and information systems materials

This role involves working in operation centers, static and mobile workshops, or outdoors. Locations include bases within Canada, the USA, the Arctic, and worldwide. Postings may require relocations, especially for the Regular Force, while Reserve members serve part-time at local units without mandatory relocations.

Entry Requirements

The minimum education required is completion of Grade 10 with applied Math. Candidates with a college diploma may be considered for direct entry following basic training. Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

Training begins with Basic Military Qualification, followed by specialized electronics and communications training at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics in Kingston, Ontario. Additional courses for specialization and advancement are available throughout the career.

Part-Time Options

Available for Reserve Force members, serving part-time at local units, with opportunities for deployment and full-time service. Reserve members are paid approximately 92.8% of regular pay, with benefits and pension contributions.
