Job description

As energy availability becomes increasingly critical, there is no end to the scope and significance of your work — and to where it can take you at Stantec. Every day, we are problem-solving and collaborating on projects that are as challenging as they are impactful. Whether designing a transformational cross-country pipeline, optimizing facilities, verifying the safety and reliability of an asset, or supporting energy transition projects, you’ll be joining a team of recognized industry experts on work that’s critical to our clients and communities. The energy industry is changing — and we’re helping clients stay ahead of the change. Join a team that’s working together with industry to deliver innovation for the long term on some of the most important and interesting projects around the world.

Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Pipeline Hydraulics Process Engineer with experience in the energy industry who has keen interest and transferable skills to work on projects in conventional oil & gas, energy transition, renewable energy, and low-carbon initiatives.

As the Pipeline Hydraulics Process Engineer, you will work on a variety of complex projects as a team lead, independently on smaller projects, or as a team member on larger projects, under the guidance of a Senior Process Engineer or Team Lead. Your primary role will be to lead, evaluate, select, specify, and engineer processes, methodologies, or products for a project. Tasks include simulations, calculations, reports, and supporting fieldwork.

The projects assigned may have complex features requiring good engineering knowledge, critical and creative thinking. The successful candidate should have experience with pipelines and hydraulic piping networks, oil and gas (upstream, midstream, downstream), energy transition, low-carbon initiatives, and/or industrial process design. Projects may include pre-feasibility studies, feasibility studies, FEED, and detailed design phases.

Your Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include engineering design activities for projects of various sizes and complexities, delegation to Junior Process Engineers, mentoring, and review of their deliverables. Peer and Cold-Eye reviews of other Process Engineers’ work may also be required.

Tasks include:

  • Development and review of steady-state and transient pipeline hydraulic analyses/studies, documenting inputs, assumptions, limitations, results, and reports.
  • Development of process simulations using industry-standard software.
  • Development of core Process Engineering drawings such as HMBs, BFDs, PFDs, and P&IDs.
  • Contributing to interdisciplinary documents like Equipment and Instrumentation Datasheets, Line Designation Tables, PSV Lists, cause and effect diagrams, Set Point Lists, Process Design Basis, and Operating Philosophies.
  • Carrying out process studies, providing recommendations, executing adequacy checks, baselining, capacity rating, and debottlenecking.
  • Process sizing calculations for safety elements, equipment, piping, pipelines, inline elements, and instrumentation.
  • Supporting operational risk assessments, hazard analyses, constructability reviews, and start-up activities.
  • Traveling to sites as needed for data gathering and tie-in confirmation.
  • Collaborating with peers and stakeholders to deliver quality products.
  • Ensuring compliance with jurisdictional, client, and Stantec requirements.
  • Maintaining positive client relationships through meetings and presentations.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and regulations.
  • Maintaining good standing with APEGA and ethical obligations.
  • Enhancing technical knowledge through training.
Your Capabilities and Credentials

Strong knowledge of pipeline hydraulics, experience with hydraulic software (DNV Synergi, AFT Suite), and familiarity with process simulation software (Aspen HYSYS, Schlumberger Symmetry, PROMAX). Experience with large pipelines, multiphase flow, non-Newtonian fluids, and process design for oil & gas, renewable energy, or refineries. Knowledge of industry standards and ability to read piping isometrics. Experience across project stages from concept to detailed engineering. Skills in process calculations, software tools, and process improvement. Strong communication, teamwork, initiative, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical preferred).
  • 7-15 years of relevant experience.
  • Registration with APEGA or equivalent as a P.Eng. is required.
