What Is the Opportunity?
Under moderate supervision, fulfill Specialty Insurance Claims mission by providing coverage opinions, conducting thorough investigations, analysis, evaluation, and disposition of claims to achieve superior customer service and claim results at the most reasonable cost. Effectively manage all assigned Specialty claims, typically of moderate severity or complexity. Collaborate with claim and underwriting colleagues and provide legal advice and transactional support.
What Will You Do?
- Analyze, investigate, negotiate, and resolve moderate severity Specialty claims within authority limits with moderate supervision.
- Identify recovery opportunities and coordinate efforts with Recovery Management.
- Prepare reports such as Large Loss Memos, quarterly claim reports, EC, trial, and class action reports for management.
- Manage and approve payments to outside counsel on routine litigation matters, following litigation management plans and budgets.
- Make decisions within your claim authority and recommend actions to management when necessary.
- Follow operational policies, including compliance and customer service standards.
- Maintain accurate documentation in claim files and management systems.
- Consult with management on claims beyond your authority and communicate reserve adjustments to underwriting.
- Mentor less experienced colleagues and lead strategic initiatives.
- Legal Support :
- Conduct coverage analysis, provide opinions, and answer legal questions impacting claims and underwriting.
- Advise underwriters on policy language and coverage extent.
- Maintain active legal license and continuing education.
- Specialty Claim Specific :
- Interpret policies, draft coverage opinions, and review new product initiatives.
- Transactional Work and Negotiation :
- Draft coverage and reservation of rights letters, releases, and settlement agreements.
- Negotiate settlements and resolutions, advising non-lawyer claim professionals as needed.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- Prior experience in the Specialty insurance industry preferred.
- 4+ years as a lawyer or claims handler preferred.
- Strong negotiation skills in litigation and non-litigation contexts.
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
- Proficiency in drafting transactional documents.
- Professional demeanor in resolving conflicts.
What Is a Must Have?
- Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Civil Law, depending on province.
- Licensed to practice law in the relevant province.
- Minimum 3 years of legal or claims handling experience.
