Job description

The Occupational Health and Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the OHS Program across all Det’on Cho-owned enterprises. This includes providing technical support, ensuring compliance with regulations, overseeing training, and promoting a safety culture. The role aims to create a safe work environment and minimize hazards to protect employees from occupational risks.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  1. Develop and review effective procedures to enhance the OHS Program, including annual assessments and revisions of policies and procedures.
  2. Gather input from all organizational levels for policy updates and ensure changes are communicated and implemented in collaboration with Senior Management.
  3. Monitor compliance with policies, provide feedback, and evaluate risk through health and safety practices, ensuring legal adherence.
  4. Ensure monthly inspections are completed at each location, participate in hazard identification, and analyze inspection data to recommend preventive measures.
  5. Manage the Return-to-Work Program, support WSCC claims, and ensure accurate incident reporting and data management.
  6. Develop and deliver annual safety training for new hires and ongoing education, maintaining records and ensuring legislative compliance.
  7. Represent the organization in communications with regulatory agencies like WSCC and emergency services, staying updated on relevant safety regulations.
  8. Assess risks for new projects, lead risk assessments, and enforce preventative measures.
  9. Support senior management on safety issues, participate in project start-up meetings, and understand project scopes.
  10. Provide reports on OHS issues to management and assist in meeting legal obligations through education, hazard management, and safety promotion.
  11. Manage the Site Docs System, track corrective actions, and link investigations to root cause analysis.
  12. Establish KPIs to measure safety performance, conduct audits, and recommend improvements based on data analysis.
  13. Mentor and train staff involved in safety, perform related duties, and support career development.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Educational background in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related fields; experience may substitute.
  • 3-5 years of safety management experience, with demonstrated ability to oversee comprehensive OHS programs.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., CRSP, CRST) are advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of applicable regulations, excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in diverse environments, communicate effectively at all levels, and travel as needed.
  • Attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and willingness to relocate or travel for projects.
