Job description

Mount Royal University – Assistant Professor, Broadcast Media Studies

About the Faculty of Business, Communication Studies and Aviation

Mount Royal University’s Faculty of BCSA includes the Bissett School of Business and the School of Communication Studies.

The School of Communication Studies (SCS) offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Communication (BCMM). It is home to approximately 25 full-time faculty and 37 contract faculty. The successful candidate’s academic home will be in the SCS where students receive a Bachelor of Communication (BCMM), majoring in one of four areas :

  • Journalism & Digital Media
  • Information Design
  • Public Relations

The business school offers a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree and hosts four departments including International Business, Supply Chain Management & Aviation; General Management & Human Resources; Accounting & Finance; and, Entrepreneurship, Marketing & Social Innovation.

About Broadcast Media Studies

The assistant professor will teach students enrolled in the Broadcast Media Studies program. Faculty are driven by experiential learning pedagogy and surrounded by state-of-the-art technology and spaces. Creative students thrive in a cohort setting where faculty utilize an exciting blend of practice and theory to develop highly skilled professional communicators. The sequence of courses ensures exposure to a wide range of industry-relevant learning. From advertising and marketing to independent audio and video productions, students will immerse in practice, all against a rigorous backdrop of communication theory and general education courses. The program also includes some courses associated with the Digital Media minor.

About the Role

As program faculty survey their collective skills and aptitudes, they are actively searching for a colleague whose exceptional technical and teaching skills intersect with research and theory. This intersection of theory and practice is meant to support students with the critical thinking skills required in today’s rapidly evolving communication industries.

The candidate would be hired on the tenure-track Teaching and Service (TS) stream or the tenure-track Teaching, Scholarship and Service (TSS) stream. The TS stream typically means teaching about 8 courses per academic year while also fulfilling department, university, and sometimes external service roles. The TSS stream typically means teaching about 6 courses per academic year, while maintaining a research / scholarship agenda and fulfilling the aforementioned service roles.

Tenure-track candidates are evaluated over a five-year period, in which colleagues examine candidate teaching and service contributions, analyze yearly peer and chair evaluations, as well as candidate reflections on scholarly teaching and service.

On the work experience front, the candidate will have significant experience in current creative media industries. They will possess a demonstrable theory-informed critical approach to their practice that lends well to making sense of big technological shifts in broadcast media industries. On the teaching front, the candidate will be expected to mentor students in an active learning environment including working with clients and community partners. The candidate will be well-positioned to teach across the four years of the program, in courses such as advanced independent projects, media marketing and advertising, media entrepreneurship, and a cross-section of video and audio production courses.
