Title: Building Inspector Level I (Full Time)

Department: Development and Regulatory Enforcement Services

Duties: The incumbent in this class will assist management to achieve an efficient operation in the Building Section of the Department through reliable performance of plan checking and building inspection for all building types identified in the scope of work within the City, observing municipal policies, security, and safety practices.

Responsibilities

As a member of the Development and Regulatory Services Department’s Building Division team, the Building Inspector Level 1 will be primarily responsible for processing and issuing building permits and conducting inspections in accordance with the BC Building Code for buildings up to 600m² and 3 storeys in height, classified as:

• Group C – Single Family Residential Buildings
• Residential ancillary buildings
• Agricultural buildings

The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties related to the above:

• Review of proposed building designs, materials, and devices for compliance with related bylaws, regulations, and codes
• Processing, accepting, or rejecting permits

Qualifications

• Education: Must have completed Grade 12
• Must be qualified to Level 1 in accordance with the Provincial Regulations and Building Officials’ Association of BC
• Working knowledge of the purpose, scope, and contents of the current BC Building Code for all Part 9 single-family dwellings and ancillary buildings less than 600m² and 3 storeys in height
• Valid B.C. Driver's Licence

Skills

• Ability to understand and apply fundamental code concepts to building design and construction
• Enrolled in a red seal journeyman carpenter program or a diploma in Building Technology (must be completed within 3 years of appointment)
• Minimum of 2 years of related experience
• Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications
• Ability to prepare and present technical and non-technical reports
• Sound knowledge of the BC Building and Plumbing Codes and related regulations
• Knowledge of accepted building trades practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment

Level 1: $45.97

Level 2: $49.96
