Job summary

Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) invites applications for a Dyke Construction Monitoring Technologist in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The role supports the Geotechnical Operations Support team by monitoring external tailings dykes, in-pit tailings dykes, and waste dumps to ensure safety, quality and compliance.

Requirements include a mining-related technical diploma with ASET CET/CTech eligibility, at least 1 year in dyke construction QC, a valid Class 5 license, and the ability to lift 50

Qualifications

  • A technical diploma in a field related to mining (Civil/Geological/Geomatics Technologist or Mining Technologist) and eligible for ASET CET/CTech accreditation.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in construction quality control of earthwork for dyke construction, preferably in oil sands.
  • Valid class 5 Driver's License with minimal demerits.
  • Ability to carry 50 lbs over rough terrain for 100 m continuously.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out and document construction quality control and assurance per ITM, QMP, drawings and specs.
  • Inspect borrow source to ensure materials meet design specifications.
  • Confirm planned placement areas align with design zonation boundaries.
  • Document construction-related communications for deviations and decisions to supervisors and engineers.
  • Record key construction activities and share updates across shifts.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Geotechnical Operations Support team, the Dyke Construction Monitoring Technologist will perform safe, compliant, and effective construction monitoring of various mine earth structures including external tailings dykes, in-pit tailings dykes, and waste dumps.

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, Alberta – Horizon Oil Sands
  • Shift schedule: 7 days on, 7 days off (alternating day/night shifts) – 12-hour shift
  • Safety sensitive position: Yes
  • Application deadline: October 6, 2026
Key Accountabilities
  • Carry out and document construction quality control and assurance in accordance with the ITM, QMP, and construction drawings and specifications
  • Inspect the material borrow source during each shift to confirm that the material meets the design specification
  • Confirm planned placement areas are consistent with design zonation boundaries, as per construction drawings and specifications
  • Document relevant construction related conversations or communications to ensure construction deviations and decisions are accurately documented and communicated to Supervisor, Geotechnical and Lead Engineer, Geotechnical Operations Support
  • Document key construction activities and communicate them with cross-shift
What You Bring To The Role
  • A technical diploma in a field related to mining (Civil Technologist, Geological Technologist, Geomatics Technologist, or a Mining Technologist) and eligible to receive accreditation with ASET as a C.E.T. or C.Tech.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in the construction quality control of earthwork for dyke construction (preferably in the oil sand companies)
  • Must possess a valid class 5 Drivers' License with limited to no demerits
  • Must be able to carry 50 lbs. 100 m over rough terrain continuously
