DRIVER APPRENTICE – G TO D PROGRAM

At Waste Management, we understand that obtaining your Commercial Driver’s License can be challenging. We recognize the time and costs involved in schooling to get your D license. That’s why WM has developed a program for Apprentice Drivers. This program will take you from a G to a D license by providing training, work experience, and reimbursement for your Driver’s School Tuition. Everything you need to become a successful and skilled Commercial Driver!

THE JOB

This position is a helper/G-D role. You will be assisting with pullouts using a pickup truck, which involves manually moving heavy loads.

Working alongside an experienced WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer, after obtaining your Commercial Driving Permit, you will complete necessary training to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely and serve customers in your Line of Business (LOB). You will remain in this role until all training requirements are fulfilled.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BE CONSIDERED?

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Valid G-class Driver’s License.
• Registration within 3 months of hire with a recognized local driving school to obtain a DZ license.
• Completion of DZ Driver Training within 12 months of hire.
• Legally eligible to work in Canada with a valid social insurance number (SIN).
• Ability to perform physical tasks required by the position, with or without accommodations.
• Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and medical exam.

WHAT YOU’LL GET IN THE PROGRAM:

• $28.79 per hour in Ottawa.
• WM will cover the cost of a driving course from a recognized driving school up to $2600.00.

*If the employee leaves within one year of completing their DZ License, they will be responsible for full repayment of the driving course. If repayment is not agreed upon, the amount will be deducted from the employee’s final paycheck.

DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES

During training, you will learn and demonstrate proficiency in skills such as:

• Performing as an on-route Helper while obtaining your Commercial Driving Permit and training to become a WM Driver.
• Partnering with a WM Driver or Trainer to learn proper operation of a commercial refuse/recycling vehicle, including:
• Operating in accordance with Safety and Life Critical Rules, Occupational and Safety Laws, and transportation regulations.
• Performing pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and documenting checks using DVIR.
• Reporting unsafe situations or issues promptly.
• Participating in scheduled training, briefings, and meetings.
• Working with the Route Manager to improve efficiencies and practices.
• Reporting incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
• Communicating service issues or hazards.
• Ensuring receptacles are emptied and the area is left clean.
• Following routes and completing documentation.
• Assisting other drivers as needed to meet customer needs.
