Job summary

Manitoulin Transport is seeking a motivated dock worker with dispatcher responsibilities to support warehousing and local driver movements. Weekly schedule runs Tuesday through Saturday with varied start times, including early Saturday shifts.

The role involves scanning, labeling, stacking, safety compliance and occasional dispatcher duties in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should have WHMIS/Dangerous Goods and forklift certifications (in-house training provided), be able to lift 50 lbs,

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Unload freight from inbound trailers and load outbound trailers using handheld scanner.
• Stage overflow freight for pickup by linehaul drivers at night as required.
• Distribute freight to local P&D Drivers.
• Mark materials with identifying information.
• Record amounts of materials or items received or distributed on handheld device.
• Count and weigh items to ensure conformance to the shipper's bill of lading.
• Arrange freight in a specified sequence for trailer space optimization.
• Support safety and maintenance of the warehouse (sweeping, storage of dunnage).
• Meet schedule: Tuesday to Saturday, with start times 9:00–17:30 (Sat 6:00–14:00).
• Computer knowledge for end-of-day labels and driver handling.

Job Description

• This is a 60% dock work and 40% dispatcher responsibility


• Unloads freight from inbound trailers and loads outbound trailers using the handheld scanner as well as staging overflow freight for pickup by linehaul drivers at night as required


• Distributes freight to local P&D Drivers


• Marks materials with identifying information


• Records amounts of materials or items received or distributed (on handheld device)


• Counts and weighs items to ensure conformance to the shipper's bill of lading


• Starts heaters, placards trailers as required


• Arrange freight in a specified sequence for maximum usage of trailer space


• Must take an active role in the safety and maintenance of the warehouse by sweeping the floor, properly storing dunnage, etc.


• Tuesday to Saturday work schedule


• Work hours Tuesday to Friday are: start at 9 AM, finish at 17:30, or when the outbound trailer loading is completed. Saturday Start time: 6 AM until 14:00


• Computer knowledge - will be responsible for end-of-day labels and handling of drivers


• Other duties may be assigned

Qualifications

• WHIMS/Dangerous Goods Certificate/ Forklift certification ( These items are covered with in-house training programs)


• Developed problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making and judgment skills


• Able to lift 50 lbs, sometimes repetitively


• Ability to multitask and manage various tasks successfully


• Ability to operate our internal computer systems and handheld scanning devices


• Dependable and able to work in a dock environment safely and efficiently while meeting timelines for departures


• Knowledge of the AS400 system would be an asset


• Willing to train the right applicant


• Have own personal transportation to and from work with a clean driving record
